Would you send your DC to Univ. of Alabama or South Carolina on a free ride over UVA full pay?

If you are a Virginia resident. This is a hypothetical. I'm just wondering how many middle class families would encourage their DC to take the free ride over full pay instate, and by middle class I mean income around $130,000, 2 children, and no college savings.

Yes, and then I'd pay grad school.

Yes.

Sounds like another grab from a big football school who needs to another "cosmopolitan" rich and smart kid from up north to balance the gene pool.

Absolutely yes.

Since when is SC giving full rides?

When my kid got his ACT scores everyone kept invoking the Alabama deal. Remember fit is also a factor. Lots of kids from VA would love the Roll Tide spirit and southern frat life of a giant state school, but don't assume all would.

Yes. My nephew just graduated from Alabama on a free ride. Turned down Univ of Michigan. Best decision ever.

How long can Alabama keep doing this? What's the end game? Once/if they pull the out of state scholarships their rating will immediately sink like a rock.

I wouldn't send any of my kids to any of those three places, for reasons beyond finances. Southern Universities are not appealing to us for a number of reasons, not least the attitude of most of the attendees and the lack of intellectual rigor.

paying $100k for something you could have for free is complete idiocy

I would probably steer my kid towards a different school with very generous merit if I had OP's income and no college savings. If I had a kid who actually wanted to go to South Carolina or Alabama, I would let them go to one of those schools, but I wouldn't push it on a kid who has no interest in them. I also wouldn't try to pay $30K for UVA on that income. There are likely to be options that lie somewhere between "free" and "UVA."

Weird, I have a degree from USC and I'm very successful in my career, had no problems getting a great job right out of school, and generally have a pleasant attitude. Have you spent much time around SC or AL residents/students or are you giving advice based off a generalized assumption?

USC was a wonderful school and I'd recommend it to anyone.

He just graduated. You have no idea about the trajectory of his career. UMich is amazing school, with large active alumni. Alabama is good for connections in... Alabama.

My sister taught at USC. I know enough to not send my kid there. Why spend all this money for house in good school district and SAT prep etc to short change at COLLEGE.
