Would you send your DC to Univ. of Alabama or South Carolina on a free ride over UVA full pay?

I think there's a huge difference between a full ride from a place that values you as an addition to the campus and a place that will take anyone with a certain test score.

Yes, I would take the full ride. Crazy not to.

Yes. Both of those schools are very good. I would encourage my child to take the free ride, especially for undergrad. One of my kids turned down an Ivy for University of Florida. Full academic scholarship. The school was a terrific fit for her. And it cost us nothing at all. Her merit aid included tuition, dorm, books, fees, and even the meal plan.

I'm not from either of those states. Surely you realize that your statement makes you sound incredibly ignorant, right? The "attitude of most of the attendees" and "lack of intellectual rigor"? Seriously? These are large universities that attract students from all over the US and all over the world.

Maybe consider climbing out of your bubble occasionally. There are smart, driven, high-achieving kids everywhere.

In that situation, I'd want my child to go to community college then UVA.

Absolutely, yes. We are a family whose daughter made such a decision. She is happy with it, and we get a School with a football team to root for.

And Virginia can stick it up their ass after taking my tax money all these years. I should've stayed a Florida resident!

He just graduated. You have no idea about the trajectory of his career. UMich is amazing school, with large active alumni. Alabama is good for connections in... Alabama.

They are both state flagships. Michigan is somewhat better than Alabama.

The PP says "Southern universities" are "nit appealing" for reasons that include the "attitude of most of the attendees" and "lack of intellectual rigor."

What, pray tell, is the "attitude of most of the attendees?" And wha statistics to you have to measure "intellectual rigor?"

Please educate me. FWIW, I'm from the South but went north to college and grad school. My undergraduate was below the Mason-Dixon Line, bu not culturally Southern, and I did grad school in PA. Looking forward to retiring down South in S few years.

No one here is obliged to educate you on this. Its partly your own ignorance that reinforces the impression these 4th rate colleges give. You can find the academic stats yourself.
