s/o How old are you? What kind of house do you live in?

33, 4 bedroom 700k house

Before that, 28, 2 bdrm +den 710k condo

Savings got us into condo. Condo appreciation got us into house. No family downpayment or anything, though we did get family money to help with some wedding costs.

^ Btw husband makes 150k+ but I only make 40k, I just don't spend much. I put myself through summer grad school at 7-10k cash per year when I was single by scrimping for 9 months every year. Same approach to getting our downpayment.

At 28- I bought a condo in Betheda.

Then at 34- we bought a townhouse in Virginia.

At 38- we bought a SFH in Fairfax that was built in the 60s but have been fully remodeled.

Five years later we have about 200K in equity in current place

We have been fortunate that our previous places rose in value too.

Did you buy the condo yourself as a single person? I don't know how I'd ever buy anything around D.C. without the second income.

I purchased my condo at 26 in the outer burbs of PW county near Woodbridge after the crash for $110k and had an HHI of $45k at the time.

I sold that for $130k two years ago and purchased a fixer upper SFH in PG county for $280k (w/ 203k loan) near Metro so I could get to the city more easily. I have a roommate in the basement and currently my HHI is $120k at 34.

TH ($545k) when we were 28, no kids in 2004. 3500sq ft SFH ($760k) in 2013 with 2 kids. We weren't able to find buyers for the TH. The value of it dropped significantly after the crash. We rent out the TH at about the same rate as the mortgage so not making extra on it. We have been able to find renters consistently so the plan is to keep it and use the income from it during retirement. Will probably sell the SFH and downsize after the kids are off to college. Maybe even move back into the TH.

Current HHI is $250k. No family money.

32, my wife and I live in a 2400sf (if you count the finished basement) 4BR 1960's split level 3 blocks from the metro in NE. Cost us $400K.

It's the perfect size for us, we get an office and two guest rooms and more storage than we know what to do with (for now) plus a decent sized yard, all for only $400 more a month than we were paying for a 1BR in NW.

There's not much around us now, but in 5-10 years I imagine there will be significantly more retail around.

Early 50s and late 40s. SFH in AU Park. Bought in 2004 and renovated relatively recently. Probably about 1.2M into the house for purchase and renovation, worth about 1.5 now, I think the renovation was a wash in terms of equity but got the house we wanted in the location we love. Very happy with it.

39 and 43 with two kids in elementary. Bought a 1950's in pimmit hills for 620k. It's 3 be 2ba with full basement. We are close to Safeway and walk to metro whenever we feel like. Marshall pyramid. Though house is small, we love the location. HHI is 160

Currently 37 & 40 - bought a 125 year old colonial three years ago.

When we were 22 & 25 we bought a 1970s ranch home in Southern California. A true starter home that included bars on the windows. We slowly renovated and made a very nice profit earlier this year.
