s/o How old are you? What kind of house do you live in?

Anonymous
There's been some debate in the million dollar homes post about "young" people buying these $850K houses. I am 29 and I and pretty much everybody I know who owns lives in a condo or townhouse. It got me to wondering how the SFH ownership breaks down by age in this area. Anyone care to volunteer your stats? If you own, how old are you, and what kind of house do you live in?

We are both 34. We just purchased a 4 BR SFH in Fairfax a couple months ago after living in a 2 BR TH in Reston for 8 years. Our HHI (me working PT, him FT) is @130K. We have one child currently in K.

Bought a SFH at 26. Worked in Biglaw and DH had saved up the downpayment over many years.

We're 38 and 40. Own second SFH, first one smaller and further out, sold in 2003. We have dogs so we never went the condo or townhouse route.

36. We've lived in a 3 br. Townhouse for 9 years & have 2 kids. HHI 165K. Some days I would like to have a larger home, but most days I am glad to be able to see the end of mortgage payments. I also like having some money left over to be able to travel. We don't like yardwork either.

I'm 45. Live in a smallish 3br/2ba colonial in upper NW that we bought when I was 37. My first home purchase was a 2br condo bought when I was 32.

35, condo. DH is 40. This is by choice, and if we were to move it would be to another condo. We prefer to live in a walkable place with little maintenance.

36- $1.35 house. I actually know a lot of people in their late 20s/early 30s who live in $850,000 houses. They're mostly lawyers and/or have family money.

41 and 47, we live in a 3 bd, 2200 sf house in a nondescript part of NW DC, worth maybe 600 or 650k in a slightly better market.

4000sq in the District? Kind of obscene.

Same here. I'm 38, DH is 39. We bought the apartment as our first purchase when we were 31/32. We're comfortable with small space living but would be very depressed outside of an urban neighborhood. Maybe we'll try for a fancier apartment at some point, but we don't really need a bigger one, and we're already in one of our favorite neighborhoods.
