Camp Rim Rock for sale?

Anonymous
I’ve been chasing a refund for summer 2023. This place is an absolute scam.

I didn't listen to today's hearing, but it sounds like something came out of there to force him to live up to the original agreement.

He has replied before the equivalent of "the check is in the mail" so I'll believe it when I see it.

I couldn’t listen in. Do you mind letting us know what happened? Is he still in Chapter 11, or did they grant him Chapter 7.

Any updates on checks?

Just received a check from Rim Rock for under $300, a "partial payment" for the full tuition we are still owed from 2020.

I don't know how bankruptcy works, but is it correct that people who are still sending their kids to this camp are helping subsidize our repayments with their tuition? If so that's crazy. The check was mailed directly from the camp.

Just got my first check for $302.

Do not send your daughter to Rim Rock.

I was a counselor this past summer and while I overall had a good experience, there were a lot of problems. We (American staff) did not get paid for most of the summer, were promised weekly direct deposit that never happened, and were given checks for random amounts when we did actually get paid, which was only 3 times total. Our first set of checks only happened (without paystubs) because a whole group of counselors threatened to leave if Joe did not have us paid by a certain day. The day came and he all of a sudden had checks for us. I know the maintenance crew were given bad checks several times. I also heard of Joe giving people advances through Venmo without any actual documentation. I do not know of a single counselor that is going back. I'm not.

Joe's not a bad guy. He really did care about us, the campers, and the experience we had there. But he's got problems and should not be running this camp anymore. Don't give him your money, and do NOT send your daughter here. If you're reading this and you're a potential counselor, don't bother working here. Go to a more established camp. I was hesitant when I found this thread last year, but I still went. All the counselors knew about this too, and we were all scared about not getting paid.

Out of curiosity, I just looked at Rim Rock's website to see if they had any information about attending any Camp Fairs this year. They are apparently planning to attend several, with one being at my kids' school in Wilmington, DE on Feb. 1. I am trying to get my nerve up to go and confront Joe in person. Has anyone else thought of doing the same?

I am looking into Camp Rim Rock for a list of camps...is anyone having trouble signing up for this summer? Will the camp be fully staffed? Did anyone have bad experiences last year?

PP please read this thread! Do not send your kid there! Seriously what does it take. There are so many good camps.

Did the other PP confront Joe?! Let us know -

Any lawyers out there who can explain how all of this is legal? File for bankruptcy, owe all of us back tuition and only send fractions of the payments, don't fully pay staff and still operate and take tuiton payments for 2024?

I am not here to judge whether Joe is a "bad guy" or not, but this isn't right. I could buy the whole argument that he was just an innocent guy who just couldn't keep up with his taxes two or three years ago when we were first told we wouldn't get our 2020 tuition refund back, but at this point it just seems criminal?

And their website says they're having an open house this weekend and they're enrolling new campers. Families need to be aware of this.

It makes me very sad as my DD who is about to graduate from college spent many happy summers at Camp Rim Rock. I hope everyone gets their $$ back.

What does this mean for camp this summer? Could the new owners cancel?

I mean, they certainly think they're running this summer but I'm not convinced. The property is for sale in two separate subjects so I think it's likely they'll lose a bunch of their land even if they don't shut down entirely. I also don't think it's great news that the auction site is calling it the former Camp Rim Rock. DD was on the fence about going back this year and ultimately decied not to. She still has friends who go so I hope for their sake it runs, but I'm very grateful we made other plans.
