Camp Rim Rock for sale?

Why do you think this? We just got a letter yesterday. Makes me wary about signing up, but hopeful it can survive since we have loved our experience there.

Really wondering what this means for my significant credit there from last year. Was supposed to be refunded by October and then end of year, but in bankruptcy, that of course won’t happen. I would be happy with a credit if the camp opens this summer.

Really hoping they are able to find a way to keep the camp going. If not, are there other good overnight camps with equestrian programs? Camp Friendship?

Hey there-former Camp Rim Rock counselor here. I worked at camp over this past summer and I wouldn’t recommend signing your daughters up for camp next year yet unless a new owner is able to take over the camp. Almost every single counselor I know has either not been compensated at all or only partly compensated for our work over the summer and the staff are in the process of filing with the state of West Virginia to attempt to get our money that we worked for. While the camp as a whole is a wonderful place, the owner Joe Greitzer has landed the camp in this position due to his illegal business practices and mistreatment of his employees. According to other staff members who have worked at the camp longer than I have, this bankruptcy and financial issues aren’t just the result of covid and there are other parents who are saying they haven’t been refunded the thousands of dollars they’ve paid and been promised a refund on for months now. Please be careful with your money and send your daughters to another camp, or wait until the camp is (hopefully) under a different owner!

Hello. I just came upon this site. In July 2019, I prepaid for a two-week session for the 2020 summer. With Covid, the camp kept pushing the cancellation date back so that the camp could see where they stood under federal and state guidance and so that parents could decide what was best for their families. For families who had paid but elected not to send their daughters, the camp offered three options (1) reschedule for a later session during 2020; (2) roll over the payment for a 2021 session; or (3) request a refund. During the second week of June, the camp notified families that reimbursements would be made by September 30. In early September, I emailed the camp and received conformation that the reimbursement would be made by check by September 30. When I inquired on September 30 and again on October 1 about my refund, I did not get a personal response. Instead, a blast email was sent out at the end of the day October 1st notifying parents that refunds were delayed until December 31. A friend who had two girls registered and I both got tired of the poor communication from the camp and wanted our money back so we contested our payments on our credit cards. We got our money credited back to us. During this past summer, the camp ultimately operated for six weeks at a much lower attendance than previous years. The low attendance levels, requests for refunds and likely fewer early registrations for 2021 apparently is too much of a strain on the costs associated with maintaining the camp. It is so very unfortunate. My daughter loved the two summers she spent there. I hope they can restructure their financial obligations and repay families who requested refunds. Unfortunately for us, the way in which things were handled this year left a bad taste in our mouths and my daughter will not return again.

This is so sad! My DD did attend last summer after we felt assured that the safety measures they’d put in place were being followed. It was a wonderful 4 weeks for her and the last extended time of blissful childhood freedoms. She’s been going since she was 7 and we’d assumed all was well.

It’s awful that the staff haven’t been paid - and one of my daughter’s friends had prepaid for last year and didn’t go - so I worry she lost that money too. We personally have had nothing but amazing experiences with the camp-and Joe. Sad sad sad.

The owner hasn't paid taxes and failed to pay some of the employees for years. Most of the full time employees left and hopefully a better owner will buy it and put them back to work.

I could have written this post - this exact same thing happened to us as well. I am so thankful we disputed the charge and our credit card company refunded the thousands of dollars we prepaid. It’s really, really sad - our daughter had a wonderful experience at Rim Rock as well, and we feel for the staff!

I'm so upset. They owe us thousands in deposits for two kids. I didn't even think about disputing it with my credit card, I'm so mad that didn't occur to me. Anyone know if there's anything we need to to do ensure we are in line as a creditor? Any hope of seeing this money ever again?

Are people disputing charges from last summer (2020) or tye coming summer (2021)?

We prepaid for 3 weeks in 2021...

I am just sick about this, my 2 daughters have gone here for the past 5 years. We paid for 3 weeks in 2020, the girls went to a two week session in 2020 CRR stated they would credit our the amount to our 2021 sessions. The girls had a blast, there were about half the campers as a usual session, the staff at CRR seemed to take ever precaution wrt COVID and things seemed well under control. As always, the girls had such a wonderful time they wanted to go even longer the next year. I paid a down payment for 2 - 5 week sessions; and shortly after paid in full as they were offering an amazing discount. Weeks after paying in full, I received the dreaded bankruptcy notice . I have never paid in full, I am so mad at myself. I think about this everyday as this was a HUGE amount of money for our family (~$2,000 credited from 2020 and another ~$11,000 paid this year). I am hoping, praying I can somehow get my money back.. not to mention my girls are devastated that there may no longer be a Camp Rim Rock. I am trying to keep the faith that they will indeed open in 2021. I will be monitoring this thread, please keep us posted on any new information.

Hi everyone. I don't know if anyone is still reading this thread but if so: DO NOT send your daughters to Rim Rock if the current owner is still in charge. I am a former director and unit head. I spent 12 summers there. I can tell you with certainty that the man who owns the camp is not the kind man you think he is. I have sat at lunch with him and listened to him talk about the moms of campers, gossiping about their marriage status or income. He has singe-handedly financially ruined the camp. He takes out loans and doesn't pay them, he is being investigated by the IRS for misuse of funds. He did not pay his staff fully, and didn't pay any of us at all until two months after we left work. This is not a COVID thing. He has been late on our payments for the last 3 years, and ignores us when we ask. He does not care about us. He does not care about your children. To him, your children are income and we (the staff) are free labor. He fired his assistant director to which he owes thousands of dollars. He has 0 staff. Camp is NOT going to happen this summer- I can tell you this with certainty, but the owner will not and will take your money if you can. DO NOT pay him a cent. I can illustrate more examples- there are so many things going on at camp that I am sure parents would love to know about, but you will NEVER hear from the owner.
I care about your children. I've spent years forming sister-like relationships with them. Because I care, I'm begging- DO NOT SIGN UP!

This is SO sad!!! My kids loved the camp and we have a very long generational relationship with it going back to previous owners. What a disappointing end to what has been such a gift to our kids. Whoever you are posting this update-thank you
