Yes! I agree with this. First - I'm so sick of Oprah making these "woe is me" statements. She's a complete bitch with katrillions of dollars that demands everyone cater to her. And really, whether the salesgirl suggested another bag or a cheaper bag, why does Oprah have to make it such a big PR issue. In her "down time" she dresses awful. Like a bum. So honestly, it probably wasn't even related to race at all - but more "you look like shit wearing your baggy sweats - let me show you something cheaper" and Oprah - who is trying like hell to be relevant again - starts pulling out the race card. Ridiculous.

I assume you feel the same way about Donald Trump.
I was thinking the very same thing!!!!

yes, but he does not walk into stores and make a scene

What scene did Oprah make? Are we reinventing the story now?

She was barely 5 mins in the store.
If I was to buy a purse like that I would not want it to have been handled by 5000 random street people

The bag diminishes in value each time a customer handles it. Also, the store will not let you hold two at once, even to compare them, unless you are very serious. Certainly not after a breeze into the store. Not too many high end shoppers on this thread.
+100 for publicity stunt.

WTF?

No one wants to buy an expensive handbag that has been handled. It is not Bloomingdales!

I think it's funny (disingenuous really) that she said she just left the shop, not wanting to play the race card - until she got before the cameras and then she did exactly that.

No, she didn't. She relayed a racist incident. There's a difference and what I find funny (disingenuous really) is white folks thinking they're some authority on whether or not a black person has experienced racism. White privilege at its finest (and most depraved) level.

This from someone who didn't identify Bloomingdale's correctly.

so you figure if a white shopper in exactly Oprah's clothes etc after a few minutes in the shop wanted to see that bag this clerk would have said sure here it is? And the only reason she didn't was the shopper's race?

You must be white. Please shut the hell up.

See. This is exactly what I'm talking about. Oprah showed about as much class as this poster.

Yes, because what one person says equals what "all" black people would have done. If Oprah was as classless as you claimed, she would've made a scene in the store. Again, please shut the hell up.

Of course you would wait to make a stink about it -- it makes for better ratings!

I don't work in hypotheticals, only reality. Let's try sticking with reality on this one.

Anonymous wrote:The sales clerk is lying. the Swiss are incredibly racist, esp against russians, gypsies, Arabs and blacks. I know bc I am from a neighboring country and it is the same there. And don't get me started on what the EU countries think about one another, it's terrible. sure, an interracial couple won't get too many stares and it is more accepted in Western Europe than in the US. However, it is very ironic that when doing business they are incredibly backwards in how they think.

Didn't this happen to Oprah and Gail at Hermes in Paris a few years ago? I am incredibly surprised that there are people who don't recognize Oprah! Even other customers didnt recognize her?

...And it's not racist to make a generalized statement about a group of people like you did?

Oprah is lying. The Hermes incident was ridiculous - she was asked to leave AFTER THE STORE HAD CLOSED, because they had a private event scheduled. They apologized because they needed to for PR sake.

Now she has trumped this up. The clerk did not speak English as a first language, and was suggesting another bag just like that one, perhaps because the one Oprah wanted to see was not as nice as the cheaper one. Based on the picture of the hideous bag, at least, that would be my guess.

Ya this was my impression too. I honestly think the shop attendant was discouraging her from the obscenely expensive hideous bag in favor of a better looking one at a better price.

A very reasonable explanation for what happened. I suspect Oprah was offended the clerk didn't know who she was since she was in her "full Oprah gear" to quote Ms. Winfrey. Image a clerk suggesting another item might be just as nice but cost less? I would regard that as good customer service whilst Ms. Winfrey regards it as racism.

Bull coppy. If she is working on commission, or receives a portion of her salary based on sales, she and all other salespersons want the customers to pay for the most expensive items. The more a customer spends the more the salesperson earns. Or, don't you know anything about sales.

Oprah is lying to grab some publicity. She said she was alone. Salesperson said Oprah had a companion with her, who opened the door for Oprahwhen leaving the shop. When is Oprah ever alone on the streets anywhere, btw? Oprah is the liar!

Oprah's apology seems very insincere. She knew what she was doing when she dropped that little nugget during her interview. I would have rather her made a scene in the store than take the passive-aggressive victim route.
