who do you think is lying....Oprah or the shop girl?

she perceived it as a slight - but it's an unfair fight - a media mogul v. a shop girl. Obviously Oprah's ego is a big as her thighs.

Please, this debate really is ridiculous. The sales clerk is lying, typical CYA. Anyone who even considers that Oprah would lie about such a small and, in her life, meaningless shopping trip, is delusional. Wake up folks! People discriminate against others based on their looks and skin color all of the time.

Being judged by your appearance happens to everyone, although people of color get the worst of it by far. in fact, I just told my husband this weekend that I wanted him to deal with a salesman because I often get treated like I am dumb or silly because I have long, pale, blond hair. People stereotype all the time and certainly, stereotyping based on skin color is nothing new. There is absolutely no reason for someone of Oprah's stature to lie about something like this, something that happens all the time!!

Have you ever met Oprah or known anyone who has had dealings with her? She is not at all pleasant in real life. I am certain that she misunderstood the shop assistant in the store.

I met her once. She was nice enough.

Exactly she seemed cool to me ... but then again Im not a racist.

You must be white. Please shut the hell up.

See. This is exactly what I'm talking about. Oprah showed about as much class as this poster.

Yes, because what one person says equals what "all" black people would have done. If Oprah was as classless as you claimed, she would've made a scene in the store. Again, please shut the hell up.

However, it is very ironic that when doing business they are incredibly backwards in how they think.

Didn't this happen to Oprah and Gail at Hermes in Paris a few years ago? I am incredibly surprised that there are people who don't recognize Oprah! Even other customers didnt recognize her?

...And it's not racist to make a generalized statement about a group of people like you did?

Oprah is lying. The Hermes incident was ridiculous - she was asked to leave AFTER THE STORE HAD CLOSED, because they had a private event scheduled. They apologized because they needed to for PR sake.

Now she has trumped this up. The clerk did not speak English as a first language, and was suggesting another bag just like that one, perhaps because the one Oprah wanted to see was not as nice as the cheaper one. Based on the picture of the hideous bag, at least, that would be my guess.

Ya this was my impression too. I honestly think the shop attendant was discouraging her from the obscenely expensive hideous bag in favor of a better looking one at a better price.

Of course you would wait to make a stink about it -- it makes for better ratings!

Okay, Oprah is a big shot, powerful, uber wealthy woman who doesn't take shit from anyone. And then she just lets a little ol' shop girl get away with what she perceived as a racist slight. She knows her celebrity status and money would have immediately put that clerk in her place if she had in fact acted in a racist manner. So why didn't she say something to her directly or better yet, ask for the manager, right there and then?

Very dumb comment. Like extremely dumb. "Person of color"?

She was barely 5 mins in the store.
If I was to buy a purse like that I would not want it to have been handled by 5000 random street people

The bag diminishes in value each time a customer handles it. Also, the store will not let you hold two at once, even to compare them, unless you are very serious. Certainly not after a breeze into the store. Not too many high end shoppers on this thread.
+100 for publicity stunt.

Because she didn't want to make a fuss about it. If you aren't black, you don't understand how sometimes you just let subtle racism go. You become almost used to it and only overt or hostile treatment will illicit an immediate response.

A very reasonable explanation for what happened. I suspect Oprah was offended the clerk didn't know who she was since she was in her "full Oprah gear" to quote Ms. Winfrey. Image a clerk suggesting another item might be just as nice but cost less? I would regard that as good customer service whilst Ms. Winfrey regards it as racism.

Yes! I agree with this. First - I'm so sick of Oprah making these "woe is me" statements. She's a complete bitch with katrillions of dollars that demands everyone cater to her. And really, whether the salesgirl suggested another bag or a cheaper bag, why does Oprah have to make it such a big PR issue. In her "down time" she dresses awful. Like a bum. So honestly, it probably wasn't even related to race at all - but more "you look like shit wearing your baggy sweats - let me show you something cheaper" and Oprah - who is trying like hell to be relevant again - starts pulling out the race card. Ridiculous.

I assume you feel the same way about Donald Trump.
I was thinking the very same thing!!!!

yes, but he does not walk into stores and make a scene

I wouldn't. Do your damn job. It's not your call to decide what is financially reasonable for a customer who enters your shop. I'd be highly pissed if I went to buy something specific and someone basically shooed me away.
