Mirena IUD and severe cramping anyone?

Anonymous
I have had my Mirena over 3 years and am (I think rather than having my period) having cramps so bad that they feel like I am in labor! Contractions like crazy...

I have had mine for only two weeks now, still cramping, but no bleeding discharge or fever. Doc says to power through, its all completely normal and that in the end I will be very pleased. Unfortunately I do a lot of walking at my job and the cramping has put me on bed rest for a few days. Note to anyone who walks a lot, does not help with the cramping, take your days off in the beginning instead of waiting until you just can't take the pain anymore!

I have Mirena, heard great things about it so I got it put in about two years ago. I was bleeding/ spotting old blood (which is browner then red); I did have pain when they put it in, and dizziness. I didn't want it taken out and wanted to give it a fair chance since I had my first daughter on the pill. Went to the doc and they couldn't find it. Went for an ultrasound and they said it is in the right place. That was a couple months ago. I'm getting it taken out ASAP. My cramps hurt to the point of loosing sleep. It feels like my body is fighting it. I also fear the embedding since I hear that that has happened quit often- enough for numerous law suits to appear. This is my experience with the IUD. The cramping for me has gone on for the two years and gets progressively worse. But I must state that the cramping is a normal side effect. I am constantly having pains but if yours is bothering you call your doctor. They usually have a nurse that can answer your questions. I have many friends who love their IUD and one of them is a doctor and she speaks highly of it. It is a great alternative to the pill. If the cramping doesn't subside it may not be right for your body. Or your body just may need some time to get used to it. Best of luck!

so i have had mine in for a year now, and it was the worst pain inmy life when they inserted it! i screamed and cried... my periods are now irregular, and i have been to the E.R. multiple times for severe cramps, i mean the worst in my life. I am 20 years old and not ready for a child, but it is getting removed in 3 days and i can't wait!

I had the Paraguard for about two years, and experienced horrible periods. Had it removed, but my period never went back to normal-- it has been extremely heavy ever since.

My goodness. What a bunch of bad experiences.

It seems now like they are putting it in women who haven't had children? When I got mine in 2005, you have to have had a child.

I had pain and cramping on insertion, and thought I had made a mistake. Then some pain on and off a few months later. But then my periods stopped, and I didn't have to worry about birth control for another 4 plus years. It was fabulous! I would have gotten another one, but tests showed I was no longer fertile.

Sorry to hear of all the bad experiences. I have had the mirena for about 9 months and I now love it. I used to have very heavy bleeding and cramps and now I have a much lighter, shorter period with barely any cramping. I will say that when I first had it put in, I had some bad cramping and thought about getting it taken out, but after about a couple weeks it went away and everything was normal. My doctor recommended it and she also has one. She explained it can take some people up to 6 months until their body can adjust, but if after 6 months, everything doesn't regulate, then you should go in and have it checked out. Or if something just doesn't feel right to call.

I had the worst cramps of my life the first month after insertion, I thought I was going to pass out in pain. I stuck with it though and every month they got more bearable. 4-6 months later I was back to normal. I'd try to hang in there for a few months.

Holy crap! I was going to get this thing, but to have cramps for a few months or weeks?! I'm not sure if it is worth it. I'm very active and have a 200 mile relay race scheduled for October and cannot afford a weeks of missed training due to this device.

Seriously rethinking this. Might not work with my lifestyle.

Alright, so i had mine put in May 20th this year, and im having horrible pain in my abdominal. With this pain i can barely do anything. Nothing helps, no meds, not a bath or shower nor laying down. It has to subside by itsself. the pain gets worse each time... i dont know if it could be part of me having a c-section or not.. Any suggestions.??

I got the Mirena put in about 2 and a half years ago. I have loved it. I haven't had my period in over 2 years and I love that part. I do get some significant cramping every 4 to 6 weeks. It lasts a couple of days and can get pretty bad from time to time, but with a combo of advil, heating pad and rest, it usually gets better after a couple of hours. All of the sudden in the last couple of days I have had some bleeding, I had this happen once or twice in the last 2 years, so I am hoping it's nothing, but I have an appointment with my doc next week and I'm going to have them check it out, just to be safe. Has this happened to anyone else?

I'm so bummed. I wanted Mirena and the more I read, the less appealing it is. I think I'll have to pass, but do want to find something that will minimize my periods.

I just had my mirena switched about 5 weeks ago. I didn't want the mirena because while I didn't have cramps or anything, my hubby kept getting poked. For 6 yrs. My insurance wouldn't pay for the control I wanted so mirena it is!! The day I had my old one removed and new put in, the doc didn't tell me I could have side effects. I almost passed out while driving home from the doc office. Dripping sweat and shaking bad. Eyes rolling in the back of my head and couldn't talk. I was scared. Made it home and took a nap. Woke up fine. Now I'm 5 weeks into this one and the cramps are so bad I can't stand it. I feel like I'm dieing. It'd prob hurt less if I did. And hubby gets poked if we even try anything. But hey... not getting pregnant so I guess it works. Idk what to do either.
