Mirena IUD and severe cramping anyone?

Anonymous
I had the Mirena IUD inserted about a month ago and didn't have any major side effects. Tuesday night I got major abdominal cramps. (I am due to start my period soon.) It felt like my stomach was in a constant contraction with cramps on top of that. I was doubled over in pain and nothing seemed to help - not Advil, Tylenol, or a heating pad. They seem to be getting better but are still bothersome enough to slow me down.

I know cramping can be a side-effect of but has anyone else had bad cramps a month or so after insertion?

Oh, just wanted to add that ordinarily I never get menstrual cramps.

I had mine placed about 4 months ago and no problems. last night had severe cramps that woke me up but not any bleeding. I also can't feel the strings this morning. Nervous, not sure what to do .

I don't have Mirena but had Paraguard for years - about 4 yrs in I lost the strings. They were 2 that were woven together and they just came apart.

As far as the cramping, I hear the Mirena is the worst offender of that. My GYN doesn't even want to put them in because she said that she ends up taking out every single one.

I hope you ladies get some relief soon. I prescribe snuggling up with a heating pad, some advil and a glass of wine.

This is very common and one of the most common reasons it is taken out. It usually subsides in 4-6 months. This is a foreign object and you uterus is trying to expell it. As time goes by this side effect should get better. As far as meds. Tylenol won't work bc it doesn't stop the contractions/cramping. Take motrin it's mechanism of action is to stop the production of prostaglandins that cause uterine cramps. Also, in the first 21 days after insertion you are at highest risk of of a pelvic infection. If you have abnormal discharge, fever etc make sure to call your doc straight away.

I did and had it taken out after about a month. Couldn't stand it. Mirena is the worst in my opinion.

go to your doctor to get checked out. I had to get mine removed due to discomfort and incorrect placement by the GYN who put it in.

I had a friend who had such bad cramps she had it removed after a week.

Ive had the Paraguard for 3+ yrs now. Pro: no pregnancies so it's working. Con: severe cramping/contractions, phantoms, and I've even timed mine like contractions! I read that the cramping stops after like 3 mos but that hasn't been the case for me. Dunno if Mirena is better or worse but I'm afraid if I switch it will be a waste of time and money! Dr. Says switch but i'm so hesitant!

2 friends had the same issue and had it removed.

My cramping has been weird since I got my mirena a year and a half ago. Terrible for a day after insertion. Since then, sometimes it's nothing (and really NOTHING), sometimes it's like my awful cramps were pre-IUD. Overall, I'm pleased with it as it has reduced overall cramps and almost eliminated my periods. Took a few months to settle in, though.

I had mine put in 3 weeks ago and the cramps have been awful I went in about a week ago they ran some tests and made sure it was still in the right spot my doctor told me that these cramps or contractions cuz my body wants it out she asked if I wanted her to take it out I told her no cuz I haven't even been able to try it yet I asked her how long I would be in pain she said 3 days and to take ibuprofen 800 mg every 8 hours and Tylenol 3 if it was really bad well I did that and now I'm almost out and they are still bad I don't know what to do I still haven't been able to try it and my boyfriend is telling me to just get it taken out cuz he wants some action

I got mirena 6 months ago and still experiencing cramps. I have cramps almost daily. Sometimes I'm lucky, and there's none. There's often that light brown blood, . I get bleeding and cramps probably 70% of the time.
Should I give it another month or 2. Hmmm!
