And the police shouldn't respond because no one should be killed over food.

Ridiculous, of course, police should respond. Stop with the "every police call is a death call." This fine young man almost killed the poor 15 year old girl over food, so excuse me for not giving a shit about what happened to him after the police were called.

+100 I'd have no issue with the police shooting him or any others of the vandals

In theory, yes. But your post seems a little victim blaming because you are assuming the girl “engaged in confrontation” with him. That has not been established. He is a very bad guy. His rap sheet is extensive. She could’ve done everything right and still had this outcome. It’s very very sad that people like Johnny Ricks exist.

I’m not blaming the victim; 100% of the blame lies with the perpetrator, but the article says employees attempted to escort him outside the restaurant. Employers and parents should make it clear that it’s not a fast food employee’s responsibility to serve as a bouncer. This story can serve as a reminder to have that conversation with your teenager.

The police had better respond to a violent rampage in a public place.

What do you expect them to do? It's not like police arrive instantaneously. Sing the perpetrator a song? Fast food restaurants have open kitchens. And presumably not enough room for all the customers and workers to hide in the freezer.

For a part-time worker who probably works 15 hours a week because she's so young? I doubt she's eligible for much.

Full medical benefits is an awful lot. Workers comp law only distinguishes between full and part time for purposes of wage loss benefits. How people take advantage of those benefits depends on them.

+1. And if "no oone should be killed over food" - Ricks should have thought of that before going animalistic.

He deserves anything that happens when the police show up. You don’t want to be killed over food? Don’t start a riot.

Where was the adult manager in charge?
25 yo man needs to be charged.
McDonald’s needs to be held accountable for poor management of situation, inadequate supervision of minor.

Don’t attempt to escort a violent person anywhere.

I worked in an art museum as a teen and we were told that even if someone tried to walk out with the monet, we were not to intervene — keep our head down and try to get some kind of description without putting ourselves at all at risk.
There’s a lot of people with scrambled brains now and I certainly hope that fast food companies are training their workers to not engage, call 911 and try to stay out of harms way.

I don't think minors are treated much differently than regular employees. Yes, they work fewer hours, and can't serve alcohol etc. but no one is acting as guardian angel to them just because they're under 18.

This is a sad crime story and I expect the publicity will motivate the system to put this guy away for a long time. I hope the young employee recovers and gets the help she deserves.

My teens also work as front line workers for modest pay. One of our "talks" with them was about the possibility of crime or other violence. They know to try to read people that come in and to remember that they are more important than any "thing" in their workplace. Give criminals the money or food or merchandise and don't hesitate to hide or run or hit or call 911 if they think it will keep them safe for another day. Nobody cares about the money in the till or the menu board or the furniture. Your employer has already made it clear that your value is about $18/hr. Sometimes, the smart move is to abandon the McDs the second things go sideways.

This is pretty much exactly what my folks told me back in the day

Except for the workers and bystanders, I guess.
