AZ now bans abortion based on dormant 160-year old law

The defenders of this law are elites lawyers who sit on the Arizona Supreme Court:

Constitutionality Decision
"Held: Simultaneous enforcement of the overlapping criminal and regulatory provisions of A.R.S. § 13-3603 and Title 36, including A.R.S. § 36-2322, does not facially violate physicians’ constitutional due process right to notice of their criminal and regulatory liability because the statutes clearly define the conduct prohibited and the punishment authorized."

I hope OBGYNs leave states that ban abortion so women have zero care.

We all know these laws only prevent poor women from having abortions.

CA healthcare system is full. Arizonians need to figure it out on their own.

More info: Arizona’s Supreme Court is currently 7-0 Republican, but two of the justices who just voted to make all abortion illegal in Arizona are up for retention on the ballot this year.

Arizona also looks sure to have a ballot referendum regarding abortion on the ballot in November.

Well not to be crass and craven but this is very good news for Democrats.

The opinion is here. It's a doozy. Court voted 4 for, 2 dissent, and 1 abstained.

Here's something for the Republicans to campaign on. The story is being summarized as "Arizona's top court revives 19th abortion ban". Good luck messaging that.

It’ll take a few hours for the trolls to find out their talking points.

But probably along the lines of “killing babies is disgusting/shameful/immoral”

What else can they say? Clearly it’s not in the best interests of women or society.

There shouldn't be any surprise here. This is exactly what the vast majority of Republicans believe - life begins at the moment of conception and all abortions are murder. Ergo, all abortions must be banned.

Trump and the Republican leadership believe states have the legal duty to ban all abortions. People are free to vote - or not vote - accordingly. For progressives these days, women's rights no longer matter. As progressives register their little third party protest votes, I would anticipate more and more states rolling back women's health care. Elections have consequences.

Damn, even crazy Kari doesn’t like this.

Yesterday in the Arizona state legislature, where Democrats need to flip just two seats in each chamber to win control in November: https://x.com/organizermemes/status/1777446937165472005?s=46&t=kf1qYlCXQnKgUhJWEIu2vg

Whatever happened to separation of church and state?

This is inappropriate behavior.

I get it. It's you who doesn't.

"California, Colorado, and New Mexico are expected to get a flood of Arizonans seeking abortions and fertility treatment."

CA healthcare system is full for Californians. Arizonians can figure out how to get out of their own mess.

What about NV? I thought it was legal there, and I know there are parts of AZ that border NV.

I mostly know this because I was briefly looking at a school in UT for my child that is just minutes from the AZ border and maybe an hour from NV.

Sorry, just trying to figure out why they are left out of the discussion when abortion is still legal there afaik.
