DeSantis and FL moving to hammer Disney

It's about time for Disney to sell a shirt saying "I threw Disney under the bus to try to become president and all I got was this T-shirt." I'd buy one.

So the BS from the prior poster (disney already lost once and the case is so bad even sn obama judge did not want it ) was just BS. Disney’s case is actually pretty strong and thanks to DeSantis who did not lose an opportunity to say during speeches and in writing that he retaliated against Disney to punish disney’s comments on the dont say gay bill (Disney actually offered as evidence DeSantis’ own book and statements). deSantis thought this BS would help him with MAGA and get the nomination over Trump, and that he would have quietly fixed things with Disney later. Instead he did not get Maga votes, moderates and independents saw him like a crazy and refused to support him, and Disney decided that DeSantis was not Trump and could easily be crashed.

A judge simply refused to toss the state case filed by the new board against Disney so the case is still there. This has nothing to do with the federal case. The fact rhat DeSantis himself went public with “hummm lets forget about this mess and maybe Disney can drop its lawsuit” tells you all you need to know about who is going to win this case and who us going to be crashed. Oh and FL taxpayers are going to foot the bill

An inspector general is looking into buying Disney passed for employees. The problem is the IG's scope is not limited. Disney should be worried about the valuations they were assessing to Disney property when they were paying taxes.

Paying taxes to the district they controlled?
Exactly. I remember the county auditor when I was growing up valued his own house at $25000

Makes no sense. They have to provide enough taxes to pay for the services Disney needs. If they don't, they only hurt themselves.

Meanwhile they also pay taxes to Orange and Osceola counties, and they make the assessments there.

There are other taxpayers, including 2 Walmarts, who would then have a higher burden. Orange and Osceola making assessments would rule out this possibility I think.

What is jawboning?

Threatening changes in laws or regulations to retaliate for something the government can’t directly stop, such as political speech.

Seems obvious this is what DeSantis did.
And then worse.

He’s admitted it.

Openly admits to suppressing free speech and targeting businesses over their politics. He needs to get his ass sued off for this.
. Oh he definitely is. I’m sure he is regretting starting this, and he will not be the one finishing it.
There is a very sad delusional poster on this thread that doesn’t understand any of this.

Disney has already lost once. Granted it was trying to get summary judgment. The reasoning by the judge matched the Youtuber mentioned above.
There was also an Obama judge who saw how bad the case was and walked away from it, giving the excuse that a distant cousin owns some stock.

When did Disney lose on a summary judgment request? They asked that the case be dismissed as moot.

+1. i am also interested in knowing when Disney lost.

They didn't. These are two separate issues:
https://www.politico.com/news/2023/07/28/disney-florida-desantis-state-lawsuit-ruling-00108828#:~:text=This%20ruling%20represents%20a%20win,that%20sued%20Disney%20in%20May.

Why do people like the PP post things that are blatantly false.

Your own link says Disney sought something and were denied. It also says that the ruling was a win for the Central Florida tourism district.

Wow, that's some critical thinking on display for sure.

More evidence of retaliation. Suddenly the government of Florida is going after Disney on all fronts. Remember when desantis said authorities should start carefully inspecting Disneys rides? The message is if you cross us in any way, we will come sfter you, audit your taxes, order inspections, check everything is by code, look in any wrinkle of your business to see if there is any way we can hurt you snd in the process we will make you waste time and money

At least someone is starting to recognize that corporations sometimes break the law.

DeSantis is term limited. Even if his successor is a Republican (likely) it’s less likely the person will feel like picking a fight with Disney. Disney just has to ride this out three more years.

Disney is in this until the law DeSantis and his gerrymandered supermajority put in place is gone. It may outlast DeSantis.

Sure. Disagree with DeSantis and he will attack your company. I am surprised DeSantis does not send the police in and arrest all the employees and tourists. Bet he is making plans for that right now.

I think the pp is right. They ride it out. FL drops the lawsuit on binding agreement RCID signed, puts non-idiots into new board. In return Disney does not sue the state for violating its First Amendment rights. Unsure how the debt burden issue gets settled without negatively impacting Orange and Osceola counties.

My favorite line from all this is when Republicans get mad that the special district is now limited government: "This board loses, for practical purposes, the majority of its ability to do anything beyond maintain the roads and maintain basic infrastructure.” Aw shucks. Wasn't that the whole point?

They need to fund candidates who will give Disney what they want. The previous district is gone.

Still, if I were a betting woman, my money is on the Disney machine. They have contingency plans B, C, D, E, F all the way through Z all ready to go.

Oh I agree with you - perhaps I wasn’t clear - but all the litigation will take a while.

The district was renamed. They couldn’t dissolve RCID because of the bond debt. The board is also filled with DeSantis donors, I mean, appointees. Those board members are making $400K/yr off this job. I don’t even know how that’s legal.

Are you surprised by the legality of the previous board buying Disney passes for employees? Extra millions for Disney's bottom line taken out of the government expense line.
