Luckily, in a rare bipartisan move, the Senate passed a bill which may see TikTok banned in the USA.
Biden stated he will sign it the moment it reaches his desk. |
Seems pretty cut and dried to me: TikTok is partially owned by the Chinese government, uses it for data mining and spreading disinformation and propaganda. Why are we even debating this? |
The biggest generator of disinformation and propaganda is our own media and social media companies. Just add a reg for social media companies to have user acknowledge this and move on. |
OK, but why even let a hostile foreign power in the door? |
Because TikToc has already turned so many Americans into addicted Zombies. |
He signed it. https://chicago.suntimes.com/nation-world/2024/04/24/biden-war-aid-tik-tok-ban-sold |
Bye China! Leave our kids alone. |
+1 |
Because a) the same arguments could be made to apply to any web site with content that some politician dislikes, creating a slippery first-amendment slope, and b) there is no real way to implement this, given the global nature of the Internet, VPNs, etc. |
OK, I guess we'll just give up then. Of course there's more work to be done, but this seems like pretty low-hanging fruit. |
Do tiktok's defenders truly believe that American tech companies are an equivalent threat to the Chinese government, which throws its political opponents in concentration camps and harvests their organs? |
do I think that Elon Musk and Meta wouldn't do teh same given a chance - no.
Google/MS I dont know about but yes musk is an open SA apartheid apologizer and nostalgia head and MZ has always been a morally bankrupt d-bag. Musk is truly evil, in a super villain sort of way and zuckerberg's parents just did a crap-job raising their kid to be "good people" they're just not, he's the poster child for banal evil. |
Hoping it is banned before the summer. The sooner the better IMO. |
This thread really shows how out of touch many are |
That's a pretty big clue that this isn't for our benefit |
