Why are kids with extreme behavior issues being mainstreamed?

Anonymous
A few SES kids came to my kid's ES this year. They all have shadows. One of them seems to be violent and it is causing anxiety in several kids in the class. This kid has tried lifting a 3rd grader by the neck before. Not sure if the 3rd grader's parents were notified.

Today was a whole new issue. At recess this SES kid ran to another kid in same class who is bigger than him, and tried to tackle him but SES shadow pulled him away. Then he ran to another kid half his size, put his arm around that kid's neck and started punching him in the cheek with other hand. The shadow ran again and pulled him away. My kid says the other kid was crying. After this the SES kid went to teacher's bathroom and knocked a painting that was there.

A few hours later SES kid ran into the class where the 1st child whom he tried to tackle was, went up to him, put a pair of scissors against him and told him "I wanna F'ing kill you. This is attempted murder". The shadow pulled him away. The new teacher started crying.

If I were the parent of any of these other children, I would raise a stink.

What is the purpose of having these kids with extreme behavior issues mainstreamed at the risk of causing fear in other students as well as teachers? Shouldn't they be in self contained classes? There are 2 other SES kids who are not aggressive so those kids being mainstreamed makes sense. But this does not.

My kid likes the school but does not feel safe when things like this happen.

The threat with the scissors and the teacher breaking down in tears is shocking. This is not normal.

this does not seem reasonable at all.

People need to raise a ruckus at the level where policy is created. I assume that IDEA, which is federal, is the reason why dangerous children are mainstream and protected vs protecting the larger society. It wasn’t the intention of the law, but it is a consequence. Time to revisit and reform some aspects.

I agree. Hence this post. Haven't we learned anything from the Virginia teacher shooting?

I wonder if affected kids' parents will be notified. I don't think this child can manage being mainstreamed, not even with the shadow. The other kids who have shadows haven't done anything this bad (throwing mulch on kids, giving the middle finger, that's it). Those kids could be mainstreamed with shadows, but a kid who tries choking classmates or threatening to stab, no way. Next year it's MS for this kid.

Squeaky wheel gets things moving. Since you're in elem, reach out to your room parent. S/he has the email list of all the parents.

Write an email to the all the parents sharing with them what you know. Then state that you are sending the following email to the teacher, principal, and the SES supervisor. Your email should state that your child felt unsafe in the classroom today when he witnessed one child try to harm another child with a pair of scissors while stating that this was an attempted murder. You should mention that the shadow was there and helped with the situation but that your child still does not feel safe. As a result, you wish to have your child moved to a different classroom.

Let the other parents know that they are free to copy your email and send it to the teacher, principal, and the SES supervisor.

If they receive 25 letters all saying that they want their child removed from the class because they don't feel safe, they will have to move the SES child, not the 25 NT kids.

Doesn't seem normal at all. What school is this, OP? I would raise a stink to the Principal.

How do you know the details of the incident?

It's easy to know all the details when you make the whole thing up.

MCPS has eliminated any alternative for these kinds of kids and they are too worried about the optics of the data. If it’s a student of color and/or EML they can do and be wherever the parent wants

Or when your child who witnessed all of it tells you?

It probably stressful for the SES kid to be in the class and causes them a lot of anxiety. But no one ever considers that. No one thinks that a big group can really overwhelm some people and they just get more and more anxious. They just don’t want to spend the money for the smaller class and good resources. You never know though, the kids parents might now have been in favor of this plan and was forced into it.
