Secondary school BATHROOMS

Posted in the thread Safety in Schools but it could be its own thread.

What is the situation with locked bathrooms at some (all?) mcps high schools? Some of these schools have over 2000 humans who need access to bathrooms. Where do students go when lines to the bathrooms are long to last the entire lunch period? Not all high schools have open lunch for students to go use a bathroom at a nearby establishment. Can you share your kids experiences at their high school?

Our go to McD for bathroom and lunch

I teach in a MS often discussed on DCUM. The children have made the bathrooms unusable. On an average day, I write about 2-3 passes per class period so roughly 10-15 a day. It is likely that 8-13 of those students will return to tell me that most or all of the toilets are purposely clogged with paper. Some are upset, but others see it as an opportunity to wander to the other side of the building or another floor.

Blame Jack Smith for stripping discipline and consequences away from MCPS. If students could actually be disciplined, the bathrooms wouldn't be a no mans land of crazy activity. Bring back actual discipline and consequences and the bathrooms could actually be used normally.

At our high school of 2500+ boys bathrooms are routinely closed due to vandalism and vaping. Kid wet his pants the other day because of this.

Admin needs to do something about attendance and get to the root of the problem instead of closing down facilities that kids need to use and are legally entitled to.

In addition to physical limitations (closing facilities) many schools also limit numbers of passes for students. I counted what my child is "entitled to" based on the policies at his school and he can go 5x/class during a marking period, and has 7 classes, so he can go to the bathroom 35/45 days. I guess the other days he just has to go during lunch or hold it.

I have given him permission to just leave the room if he's denied access to a bathroom and needs it. I'll deal with the discipline. His doctor is willing to write a note because my kid has suffered from health consequences related to holding pee and poop before.

+1 we ended up in the ER due to blockage from DC holding it too much.

It really makes me mad that all kids are being punished for the actions of a few. If those kids want to vape, let them vape their little hearts out. Why should my kid be punished for the bad things those kids do?

My child is at a HS that folks around here like to say is Ganglandia, and the bathrooms are open. The kids also have an hour-long lunch, which gives plenty of time for kids to use the facilities.

With that said, I was in a MS the other day and the bathrooms there were closed.

Our high school constantly has bathrooms closed because the kids vandalize them (deliberately clogging toilets being the main issue I think.) If students are frustrated by the situation then please report the problems as soon as they are found. Security can look at cameras and figure out who did it if reported immediately, but not if an issue goes all day and 50 kids go in the bathroom and never say there was a problem, leaving it for building services to find at end of day.

See something, say something…

Sign up at the upcoming Board of Education hearing, but switch up your topic to bathrooms. 3 BOE members want your vote this year but can't be bothered to hold a hearing about bathroom access.

We need a reporter on the case to get questions from McPS!

This topic has been discussed a lot here over the past two years.

Here's a good thread to get some historical context: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1110549.page

Thanks 18:37. Definitely have to catch up on reading here. I'd rather not know frankly but...

Maybe this is a W school thing or something but we don't have these issues at our DCC school.
