Two security guards at a high school in Montgomery County, Maryland, were recently hospitalized after breathing in smoke from an unknown drug inside a school bathroom, officials say.

The guards were checking out an odor coming from a bathroom at Northwood High School in Silver Spring on Feb. 17, when they "experienced adverse reactions," according to a letter school officials sent to parents about the incident.

Montgomery County police said the guards experienced “odor induced vomiting."

According to the school's letter, the guards found two students and visible smoke in the bathroom. The students admitted to "smoking an unknown drug in the bathroom" and are facing punishment, school officials said.

"It just smelled like, you know, feces … and like something that burned," said Richardo Morales, a junior at the high school.

The area around the bathroom was closed off for the rest of the day.

"They had to bring in fans to air it out. So, while they were doing that, we had to relocate," Morales said.

Wow, that's terrible. And horrible that the security guards had to deal with this. Hope they're feeling better.

The drugs in bathrooms really is an issue that McKnight needs to address.

I didn't realize they were in MCPS. Gun laws aren't working that well. Should we get rid of those, too?

DP.. then how do we stop the drug use in the bathrooms at school? This is a serious problem we are having in MCPS, so yea, I say use a hammer, not a feather.

You misunderstand the metaphor.

There should many tools in a toolbox: hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, wire cutters, punches, saws... (not feathers). All of these tools are for different purposes. In contrast, PP only has one tool ("bring back the SROs"), which they want to use for every purpose. Drugs in the bathroom? Bring back the SROs! Fights in the hallways? Bring back the SROs! Mental health problems? Bring back the SROs! Kids dropping out? Bring back the SROs! Vandalism? Bring back the SROs! Bullying? Bring back the SROs! A lead in the spring musical can't memorize their lines? Bring back the SROs!

I don't disagree with your overall point that we need nuanced solutions to nuanced problems, but the only things I see people exclaiming bring back SROs for is drug use, fights, weapons and school shooting threats. Which makes sense since those are criminal, violent acts that fall squarely in the jurisdiction of policing.

It doesn't have to be MCPS to know that SROs have failed almost everywhere. Parkland and Uvalde are well-known examples of SROs not delivering what was promised. THey do not make schools safer.

The problem is MCPD is not enforcing laws at our schools, so felony assault and controlled substances are being ignored.
