Secondary school BATHROOMS

What is the situation with locked bathrooms at some (all?) mcps high schools? Some of these schools have over 2000 humans who need access to bathrooms. Where do students go when lines to the bathrooms are long to last the entire lunch period? Not all high schools have open lunch for students to go use a bathroom at a nearby establishment. Can you share your kids experiences at their high school?

Sign up at the upcoming Board of Education hearing, but switch up your topic to bathrooms. 3 BOE members want your vote this year but can't be bothered to hold a hearing about bathroom access.

My kids say it's not a problem at our school. Not sure which schools have these potty issues.

I know most of the HSs are old and bathrooms were designed differently than the newer school bathrooms - can the doors to the bathrooms (not the stalls) be left open? Could having doors assist security in clearing out the bathrooms? Not the bathrooms where you can see stalls from the hallway but the newish ones where there might be a wall between bathroom door and main area where there's stalls and sinks.

Maybe this is a W school thing or something but we don't have these issues at our DCC school.

Hahaha

RM has this problem and is not a W school.

I wish someone would sue MCPS about it. It’s utterly ridiculous to not give access to bathroom. They couldn’t do that in a prison.

Can't they have an area outside away from school building for those needing bathroom for other than peeing, pooping, washing hands, and applying makeup ?

Seriously, why hasn't any one yet?

Can see the NYT headline. MCPS and its optics bye bye.

My daughter said Sherwood boarded up at least 4 bathrooms.

It’s been bad at WJ with locked bathrooms. It’s already a large and overcrowded school.

Get every high school newspaper in the county to run stories on the states of their bathroom access, condition, and activity issues. That should get the general media's and the BOE's attention.

What are the PTSAs for these schools saying/doing about it?

Maybe kids would have fewer issues if they had more ungendered bathrooms.

What can they really do? Is MCPS doesn’t give the schools security guards to monitor the bathrooms, what is the option? One of my kids schools did increase the security guards posted near bathrooms recently and it seems to have helped.

Anonymous wrote:In addition to physical limitations (closing facilities) many schools also limit numbers of passes for students. I counted what my child is "entitled to" based on the policies at his school and he can go 5x/class during a marking period, and has 7 classes, so he can go to the bathroom 35/45 days. I guess the other days he just has to go during lunch or hold it.

I have given him permission to just leave the room if he's denied access to a bathroom and needs it. I'll deal with the discipline. His doctor is willing to write a note because my kid has suffered from health consequences related to holding pee and poop before.

He also can go during the passing. Four min is enough for a quick pee if you can use a urinal.

We need to find some staff who can keep an eye on "things" in bathrooms.

I'm sure they'll pay for the opportunity!
