2024 Girls Lax WCAC ISL Outlook

WaPo is the Columbia U of newspapers.

OK kids. Here's a thought. What if most of what is in the newspaper is written by ambitious English majors who are may not actually get it.

"Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray's case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the "wet streets cause rain" stories. Paper's full of them.

In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about [] than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know."
– Michael Crichton (1942-2008)

When Washington Post writers - young, old, retired or otherwise - fail to check the records of the teams they rank they should discover a new line of work.

And moving on….a Visi win tomorrow vs Saints locks up 1 seed vs Potomac; Saints win…then what? 3 one loss teams. Didn’t this just happen last year?

Oh so true. It’s a transparent ploy to try and be egalitarian no matter the utter ignorance of accuracy. Can’t have the public school parents upset after all, even at the expense of reality. Yorktown would be unlikely to even place in the AA tier of the ISL and would rank at the bottom of the WCAC.

Sounds like it's the clueless private school parents who are upset that a public had the temerity to be mentioned in the same local poll. And through no fault of coach Kim, Yorktown would be the best team in the DMV if the strongest players in her school district didn't decamp to the privates.

And people who actually follow the sport look to USA Lacrosse, Inside lacrosse, or other sources for more accurate polling; no one cares about the WaPo polls except for the aged out mean girls on this site. .

None of those polls do DC-area lists so that doesn’t make any sense.

Neither does your point about how Yorktown would be a top DMV team if players were forced to live in some dystopian school system where kids are required to attend a designated school … Yikes. (For kicks, without naming names, please share what privates these elite impact Yorktown-districted players have ”defected.”)

You’ve offered no argument to contest the point that Yorktown shouldn’t be ranked. It sorta sounds like you actually agree.

Currently there are girls from the Yorktown district playing for Visi, SSSA, Potomac, SR, and I think SJC. Take those girls from the privates and those teams would be weakened while Yorktown is strengthened. Despite annually losing talent to the privates, Yorktown has been crushing the public opposition this year.
And it seems petty for people to be upset that the WaPo has them ranked...so what if a team having a good year gets a shout out?

1. Getting a "shout out" as an underserved ranking is not right. It like the illinois privates getting national rankings eventhough their schedule difficultly is way below that of east coast teams.
2. Yorktown gets undeserved "shout outs" more than any other local public high school so such a shout out is hardly needed to prop this pool of advantaged girls.
3. Clearly YT is "fine" without the private girls who live in YT district. The decamping is true of ALL public districts. Thus irrelevant to YT's situation and the to the ranking. Rankings are not based on "what ifs"
4. The abundance of talented lacrosse players that live in the YT catchment says nothing except that the families there can afford to live in an affluent area/have early and sustained access to training and plenty of white priviledge. This is why YT dominates the 6A. They are a big fish in a middling pool of talent. Yay YT!

This is a thread for WCAC and ISL so let's get back to our conversation and leave YT behind.

Those of you tweaked over a Washington post opinion poll are missing the point of this forum. Please redirect your attacks to first grade admission standards, which coach on the verge of a championship season must be fired, which school has meaner girls for inappropriately celebrating, and other recurring themes we’ve come to love.

Come on people. We are better than this.

Visi beats sssas by six on Thursday.
Potomac will be upset in first round of ISL playoffs by Holton Arms having higher academics.
Sr blasts sssas in semis by 10 setting up championship between visi and sr.

Sr wins in triple overtime but Yorktown awarded the trophy because most of the players should have attended Yorktown.

Back to ISLs - I think it is anyone's league to win this year (of top 4)

WCAC - no question GC

DC - Visi but it will be close

VA - St. Anns

Yeah, I meant next round
Don’t think Bullis is beating anyone, and Potomac will beat HC

I disagree. Lacrosse is the only sport that sticks the 5th best team in a league in a top 20 poll. Basketball doesn't do it, football doesn't do it (and the SEC really wants to), baseball doesn't do it and soccer doesn't do it.

The best local MD and VA public school team should be in a top 10 (with 8 private schools). Otherwise, lacrosse is just some regional game.
