What would be an appropriate hourly wage for this job description?

I live in Potomac, Md.
Looking for part-time nanny to start in Oct 2025. Care for one 6-week old child. Driving would be a great asset. English speaking. CPR/first aid certification. Up to 2 Years of experience. Hours 7am to 4pm weekdays. Lite housework when baby is sleeping.

I'm sure you're great at your job, but wow, $40 an hour? For that I'd want you to anything I asked you to. I also am amazed that there are many people willing to pay this when you can find excellent, educated nannies for half that. Good for you though

Absolutely good for her. You sound just a TINY BIT salty.
Omg that fact you even have to ask is disgusting . She isn’t asking for a week off to go on vacation it’s for her father who has a stroke.
Yes, you should be a kind employer and pay her.
Listen, I'm a nanny, and I wouldn't ask to get paid when I'm gone. BUT if I had a family that offered to pay I'd be extra grateful and willing to help more to make up for my absence.
Nannie’s usually have guaranteed hours in their contracts. If it’s not in her contract it needs to be put in there. You shouldn’t look at it as paying for a week of absence. You should look at it as being a decent employer and doing the right thing.

However no one would expect you to pay her an entire workweek along w/paying for a backup Nanny as well.

I think what is most important for your Nanny is for you to keep her job open for her so when she is able to return - that she still has her job to come home to.

Hi OP here, she is actually really good we have no complaints. This would be her first time requesting any significant time off other than us actually giving her time off. I have a hard time processing things like that (paying when you're not at work etc). She's been with us for almost a year and though she didn't ask to still be paid I don't know how to handle Friday (pay day) when I only pay for this week. I think when parents ask questions much like mine it's immediately assumed she's a horrible nanny, she's not in all honesty. She will obviously still have her job I just can't wrap my head around paying for a week of abscense in this economy.

2. I have more concerns about eye strain and attention span than parents do, so I limit screentime. That's my choice, and I don't work for families who want to insist that I use screens with children under 2.
3. Every child needs to have a mix of structured and unstructured time, and they need to learn to self-entertain. Teach the child to play independently in your line of sight while you do what you need to do.

I have read that many experts state that screen time is not healthy for a child under two years of age.
My now grown children were raised w/the TV on since they were infants since back then there was no Alexa to issue commands to play music and it was tough for me being stuck w/small kids in a quiet house.
They never experienced any cognitive or developmental issues in childhood ->> adolescence.
These experts cannot specify what damage actually occurs in young children exposed to screens before age 2.
Without any empirical evidence it is tough for me to actually believe their theory.

And now childhood experts are saying that the popular childhood program Cocomelon is akin to giving crack to a baby??!

I think it is important to separate facts from opinions.
I personally think parents who do not “allow” screens when their Nanny is on-the-clock yet have the TV on only when she is gone are nuts.

There is a HUGE difference between a Nanny who ignores/neglects her charges while texting or scrolling on her phone vs. a Nanny who could use a small break to clean up the kitchen after lunch or to simply unwind after a long walk from the park or library.

I could never work for an employer who would specifically tell me that I am not ALLOWED to do something.

Yes it is their home + those are their children - no one is disputing that - but that doesn’t give them the right to instill house rules that they break while the Nanny is away…..

Anonymous wrote:My children gave my nanny a cold I let her go home early on Friday because she was clearly under the weather. She had a three day weekend to rest because of the holiday. In my opinion she can work today Tuesday but I’m getting push back from her. She’s saying she’s still fighting the flu and I’m being unreasonable. Thoughts?

Can someone help me ? How to engage with him and what kind of interest he might have.
Thanks

This boggles my mind. Either you know how to interact with elementary-age children or you need to spend some (unpaid) time doing so.
You negotiate which days are off, paid or unpaid. I typically work all holidays.
WTF.
Yes pay her if you want her to keep being your Nanny. Either take a week off yourself, split it with your spouse, or find coverage.
