I would agree with this.

A sitter comes by for occasional work with the children and otherwise has something else that occupies her days - often a student of some sort or a recent grad between jobs. She feeds the kids, plays with them, gets them to bed, and at most, might load up the dinner plates and put toys away in terms of work around the house. She follows instructions and rarely does more than is asked.

A nanny is usually full time, but even if not has some sort of consistent schedule with the kids, is responsible for not just keeping the kids in decent shape but for enriching their days - taking them to activities, doing educational activities at home, and might be in charge of household tasks at home - like keeping the play room organized, teaching the kids to clean up after themselves, doing the children's laundry, giving the kids baths, and she may or may not have household-only tasks if there's a lot of downtime with naps, kids in part time preschool, etc. A nanny has a bigger scope of work and more responsibility, is expected to take initiative to keep things in order and the kids on the right track.

Very well said.

I'd nominate the above poster for
"Nanny Employer of the Month".

Sitter simply does what she is told.

Nanny takes full advantage
of her experience and training.

Why do parents want an experienced nanny?

This is a good question for parents to consider.

You don't really believe yourself, do you?
People who "do housework" are called housekeepers.
(Just ask one.)
Some of them will try to keep an eye on your kid,
if you ask her.
That is NOT a nanny.
Doesn't everyone know that?

During naptime I like to plan and prepare the child's meals. The cleaning lady does the cleaning.

Bump. Cost of living has gone up, of course.

You're bumping a more than 2 year old thread to perpetuate a "sitter vs. nanny" debate?

That's pretty sad.

New parents are still asking what's the difference. It's ok.

Whenever a new poster is asking the same old question.

A nanny does all that and more - she works to provide an environment that is intellectually, emotionally, and physically stimulating, and she often has a child development related degree and/or experience.

A sitter does as she is directed to do by the parents, without offering ideas/suggestions/advice.

A nanny does as she is directed to do, but she also expects to give advice, offer ideas, help parents resolve issues, and take initiative.

Agree, except on rare occasions a nanny does need to say “no” to the parents. Sounds unbelievable, but I actually had an attorney mother ask that I spank her toddler. It disgusts me to even admit that. Needless to say, I soon resigned.

Not a Nanny’s job to do housework we’re not housekeepers we’re just Nanny’s. We eat our lunch while the baby is napping did you ever think we have to eat too??? If you want a housekeeper hire one simple as that! Most people want to under pay us Nanny’s and when you do that you’re going to get what you pay for. Being a Nanny is our career just like your job is yours. If you only pay us 17.00 an hour can you live off that??? No right???? Neither can we! Some of these parents want to be so demanding and don’t pay us enough for all that! You want to stay working at home go out how can you all seriously expect us to do our job when your children are not listening to us because they know your home working it makes our job a living nightmare to be honest. Let us do our job stop getting in our way of that seriously it’s annoying!!!! Pay us enough so we can live too we have rent by the way our rent isn’t cheap then gas and clothes went up and food as well! Being a Nanny full time is a lot of responsibility I take my job very seriously and for what to get paid hardly nothing! Full time Nanny’s are untitled to have full time benefits yearly raises and Christmas bonus at 1,000 in cash! We make make sure your baby/children are safe and happy and fed we go through a lot being a Nanny at least pay us enough money to survive in this world. Just like you are. We need that too! These parents need a reality check! We’re not baby sitters there is a BIG difference between a babysitter vs a Nanny. A babysitter is someone you call if you want to go out on date night to a movie and dinner. A babysitter doesn’t have half of the responsibility as a us full time Nanny’s do. We take care of your precious pride and joy all day long Monday through Friday 40 plus hours. Give us our props please! Some of these parents need a wake up call and I’m here to give them one…. Think about everything I said and stop acting like we re just nothing!
