They’re in my contract and I’m free to use them as I see fit.

My employers have not gone into the office due to being hungover, having a headache, prepping for a super bowl party or just because they need a mental health day

I deserve the same. So do you.

Of course you do but that’s not the issue nor question at hand. We’re talking about asking for bereavement day (s) separate from PTO or vacation time. Many companies do it for a loss. A nanny wanted it for her dead cat.

You need to show up for work regardless.

One poster said her Mom died on a Saturday and she showed up for work the following Monday.
If she can do that then no one should be taking any time off for a silly cat.

You sound like a heartless bitch. All of you are idiots.

I have no faith in humanity. some of y'all are truly sad excuses for humans. point of the post: just be a good employee. you know what it means. but don't tell other people they're absurd because they're cat died and they're grieveing. I would rather hang out with my cat than some of you people on here who sound utterly horrible.

Stop being a fool! You can grieve a pet or loved one and still work.

Stop being a heartless idiot.

I’m sorry for the lady that loss her cat. When my dog of 16 years passed away, my employer (a pet lover also) gave me the day and even though I have plenty of PTO he still paid me.
If you need the day and have PTO you must use it, mental health it’s very important.

As far as paying under the table; to each it’s own. I heard of Nannies that are getting compensated cash because otherwise they wont be able to qualify for health insurance through government. If your employer pays you on the books(my case) get stipend for health insurance.

Best wishes to all the caregivers out there.

Not all employers, especially, household employers, offer health insurance stipends. While you shouldn’t be paid under the table for numerous reasons, that’s none of our business as to why people choose to do so, and it doesn’t affect us in anyway. As long as you continue to do YOUR job well, you should not be affect by someone else and their choices.

Sorry to the lady who lost her cat and wishing the lady who broke her ribs a speedy recovery- that must’ve been painful.

You may be able to take time off whenever you want, but some of us have to give a good reason if we aren’t giving the contracted amount of notice. Having a pet die does not negate my contractual obligation to provide a minimum of two weeks notice that I’m going to use PTO. I can use sick days when I need to, but as much as I am an animal lover, I wouldn’t feel right about using sick days unless I was actually sick. I give a minimum of a months notice for vacation. The only way that I would get around the contracted amount of notice is for bereavement associated with a human member of my family or a medical appointment that I can’t move.

I have unlimited sick, unlimited vacation and unlimited PTO... to a point. No sick leave while I'm sole charge and my employer is out of state, just muddle through as best as possible. Unlimited PTO is for appointments scheduled at minimum 2 weeks ahead, barring emergency appointments (which fall under sick leave). Vacation is scheduled 1-3 months ahead. Bereavement is 2 weeks if I'm the executor, day of service plus travel if I'm not, and it only applies to family members and my partner.

News flash: professionals go to work when a pet dies.

You’re right. You are truly pathetically ridiculous.

Newsflash: professionals also use PTO when their beloved pet dies.

Yes, dear, professionals take earned PTO not Bereavement Days!

Oh honey, it’s still time off.

It's not the same. Bereavement is not earned, is paid, and is taken on short notice. PTO is earned, paid, and most employers require notice. Sick leave is earned, paid, and short notice. None of them are applicable for a cat death, unless your employer allows short notice PTO.

If it's a short notice request and the contract specifies a notice period before using the day? yes!

I agree. Op sounds like a Nazi. This is not the army. This is a community of people helping caregivers and helps families.

Chill out mom/dad! If the baby is happy, let it be

If the families are happy and the nanny too then it's fine. Even if the nanny gets paid under the table (good luck finding a family who can pay everything) she still pays her taxes every year. She doesn't have medical insurance but gets paid well .

Indeed. Heartless people, I feel bad for their kids.

Wow most dog people here seems so heartless. And they have the 24/7happy dog. I feel sorry for their kids.
The cat people here seems more empathetic.

Its nice to see not everyone is heartless. People needs time off. That's why you see your boss taking a nap or a break from work or daily routine. We aren't robots. Or do you want robot to take our jobs?

The family I work with are so nice! They always pay me the hours I don't even work. I get days off when I ask in advance or when I feel sick I call that I can't go to work. Sometimes my boss is late and that's ok.
My husband's cat died and I asked time off. He was really sad. It's nice to work with people who enjoys helping the community. Help each other.
I haven't renew my contract this year yet and my boss still pays me all the hours and I leave early most days and I work half day Fridays. They are so nice. Love them. Los quiero mucho. I care about their kids, what they eat especially. Very good eaters of healthy foods. They love cheese pupusas!

I take time off too and they still pays me. Just like my boss, takes time off too for whatever reason.
Life isn't about work all day like a robot.
