Don't do it, OP. Nothing about an upgrade to business is worth the possible hurt feelings and ensuing bad attitude. All fly together and be a team.

Bad idea - nothing positive can come out of you doing this OP. And no amount of money saved makes this ok. I can't imagine you as a good employer if you thought about this, wrote it down for others to comment on and went a step further to defend you asking the question! tsk tsk tsk

And I really hope that your nanny does not see this post and wonder if this is her family and her employer asking this question

I saw this posting on "Be The Best Nanny...." on Facebook a few days ago and saw some excellent advice on there as well.

For this specific international trip, there is literally a $10k difference to have DD and nanny in economy vs in business. That's just hard to swallow for a 2 year old (who is just now too old to be a lap child), and we were wondering if this could in any way be an acceptable way to help defray the cost of flights.

OP if you want to save money then book everyone in coach! Ta-Da!

Actually 10K will buy a lot of hurt feelings.

Depending on how rich I were - why not talk to nanny: That you can't afford all of you in business (if that's true), so you could all fly in coach (or premium economy) together;or your arrangement - but then offer her some of that 10k saved (1-2k) as compensation. And don't expect to see your child during the flight. Easy. Or just book yourselves separately and deal with a grumpy nanny (flying alone with a toddler in coach is hell).

Nanny here- If you want the nanny in coach, you take the kid for the entire flight. But of course you won't because we can already tell what kind of a person you are...

Anonymous wrote:No, OP, it is not acceptable to have your nanny and child in economy class on the same plane with you and DH in business. It is also impractical and your child will be crying for you the entire flight.

And everybody else in economy will hate the constantly crying child and the nanny that can't calm the screaming kid down. Mommy walking back and forth will confuse the child even more and fun will be had by everybody 5 to 10 rows to the front and back to where child and nanny sit (and everybody while mom drags the screaming child back to economy from first to hand it back over to nanny).

2. Family (including your child) in business/first, nanny in coach. You take care of your child during the flight. Nanny does not work during the trip.

Nanny here. I wouldn't mind my nanny family to fly business and have me fly coach. Flying business requires many $$$ and I'd feel awkward to have a family pay that amount for me to fly business unless they were super rich of course.
But I'd be upset of taking care of the child on board as coach seats are so tight, it can be a nightmare, especially if the kid knows their parents is onboard as well - and they will absolutely know they are, we're not playing hide and seek

Anyways, I'd just be happy to go on vacation, wherever that is and find out about a new location. I don't care about not being offered business class.
