We are taking our nanny on an international trip for the first time. My husband and I will be flying business class, and we're wondering if it is ok to have the nanny fly economy. We will most likely book our toddler an economy seat next to her, but then still have DD up with us most of the flight so at least the nanny would get two coach seats for some extra room. Do you think this is fair?

No. We book our nanny economy if she is flying to meet us someplace but booked with us in business or first if she is flying with us. First, it is much more helpful to have her close to us and DD, and second, it would feel insulting to have to in the "back of the bus".

Why tempt hard feelings and a miserable child for a couple hundred dollars, OP?

Don't do that, OP! You are setting the mood for the entire trip - don't treat your nanny with that kind of disrespect on the way to her first trip with you!

LOL! OP, why would you do this?! Come on, Girl, think!

Yeah, it is insulting. And no it is not right.

Nanny here and my MB/DB always book my seat next to theirs in First Class with a seat for the toddler. I can't imagine it any other way and honestly have never heard of a nanny and the toddler being asked to sit in the back.

Don't you want to be near your baby if there is turbulence or she gets upset or sick? Why would you treat an employee like that, OP?

That's really crummy. You cannot care for your child during a flight? Why bring the kid at all?
Anonymous
They aren't going to let your kid in first class if you did not pay for it and they have a seat in coach.

And the nanny schlepps to the back of the bus with all the toddler stuff! And the poor toddler can see his parents but can't get to them.

Oh, this is going to be a fun, attitude-free trip! Well done, OP - you have officially ruined your trip before take off!

Wow, OP. Please tell me you are not being serious?

Nanny here. I wouldn't mind flying coach and see my employers fly business class. But I would need to be compensated for the hours worked on the flight and get enough time off to rest as well.

BUT most companies won't allow a child to switch from coach to business or 1st class to accomodate the parents, be ready for that.

When I used to fly for business and I would be traveling with the partners in my firm, they were first class and I was coach. Not sure whether or not this is a similar situation.

Of course you would be compensated for the time on the flight regardless of whether or not you flew first/business class or coach. You should have a travel rate for travel days worked out in advance.

However, I cannot imagine my employers EVER having me ride in economy with their toddler while they sat in First Class. I am always with the family - I would be insulted if I were OP's nanny and that is a stinky way to start a vacation/trip.

I'd be fine flying coach IF I didn't have any responsibilities for the kid during the flight. It's rude as hell to expect your nanny to March your kid back and forth to see you and deal with the ensuing tantrums

I am surprised. I have always flown in the same class as the partners. I think it is in my contract.

Please don't do this to your nanny, OP. Either book all seats in economy or all in business.

Look at all the princess nannies over here ...
What's wrong with flying coach? You're just the nanny, you're not part of the family, you're just an employee.
Stop being this demanding !

Nanny.
