I used to clerk for a trial judge. My judge excused anyone who said they didn’t get paid for jury duty or if it posed some other burden, like they were a stay at home parent. A fair judicial system is one with a diverse jury pool. But the reality is that you see retirees and white collar workers overrepresented because they have the ability to serve without being distracted by worry. No one wants jurors failing to show up after a trial has begun.

She has some vacation leave she could apply to cover the first week but cannot afford to work without her usual pay past one week. I will be hiring temporary help (at a higher rate than what I pay her) to cover her hours away. I know that household employers are not required to pay an employee while they are on jury duty. MBs and DBs who have had experience with this, what do you recommend as a fair way to handle this situation?

If you like her and want her to stay, then pay her. You make ait more money than you are paying her and the good will you will gain is invaluable.

I never had more than 3 days at jury duty. The judge won't out w nanny on a case due to hardship for the parents to find childcare. You can't take vacation days away from the nanny for jury duty. It's not the nanny's fault for getting jury duty. It's a civic duty.
