An extra paid week of vacation seems like a great way for them to show that they know you're worth more without spending more money they can't afford. My DH is presently a fellow (slightly better paid than a resident, but just by steps up the same shitty scale) and, though we can afford our nanny share -- $12.45/hour, to gross up to $11.50/hour, for 50 guaranteed hours/week -- without dipping into savings, it is really, really tight. Honestly, I don't know that we'll be able to offer our nanny any raise next year (which we've been upfront about), so we were just discussing adding 2 extra weeks of paid vacation -- 1 we families pick and 1 she picks. Once DH finishes fellowship, we can do two years worth of raises at once; I think/hope she knows we value her and it really is a money crunch... I think/hope the unexpected extra vacation helps convey that. |
