I am starting a new job in October and I will be using my personal vehicle to transport the kids to school and activities.
Do I have to change my insurance policy to reflect that and if there’s an increase in cost do the parents have to pay the change in insurance cost. Thanks This is the first time that I am driving kids so just wanted to know. |
| No you don’t have to change anything they just pay for your gas . Mileage reimbursement |
| I used my car too and didn’t change my insurance. If the kids need car seats make sure you know how to install them correctly. |

This is an excellent question because it brings up important issues when it comes to driving while on-the-job when working as a Nanny.
Yes, I think you should let your insurance know for liability issues. And if there is an increase in your auto premium than your Nanny Family should definitely cover that extra co$t in my opinion. If your employers do not want to do this, then it may be ideal if instead they provided you w/a vehicle to drive their kids to school + activities. Good luck!

That's a great point about the car seats. I've always asked families to purchase a set to stay in my car. I didn't use the back seat much/ever, and it was much easier to have them stay in my car at all times. |
This isn’t the way car insurance works. When you sign up for a policy, you select what coverage you want (collision, comprehensive, etc) and the policy limits (e.g $100,000 per accident). The insurer doesn’t care about who you are driving, they just need to know what limits you need. OP needs to look at her policy limits and see if she should increase anything in light of the children. If she increases any limits or adds additional coverage, there will be an increase in her premium. |
| Never drive your own car. If the want you to drive then they can provide an automobile. |
| I would have them provide a car if driving is a requirement of the job but yes, you need to inform your insurance and have a special rider on it for work or you may not get covered in a serious accident. |

Yes, you need to change your policy as you’ll be driving kids that aren’t yours AND increase PIP. Your vehicle will be used as ‘work vehicle.’ Nannies please be aware of this. If using your own personal vehicle getting mileage reimbursed it’s fair BUT you need to ask for $$toward the insurance. I’ve never driven kids in my own vehicle as all my employers had a designated car for the children and/or use the vehicle of the parent that worked from home.
Thus, mileage reimbursement doesn’t cover wear and tear. |
