Hi!Im new here and first time mom who started interviewing nannies. We liked one that we think will be great for our family and want to be fair with her.
Can you please tell me the holidays I'm supposed to give my nanny? She is starting a full time nanny job in less than a month and I need to write down a contract asap. Thank you. |
You probably should have discussed before hiring, but the major federal holidays are the norm. If it's a day you don't get off, I would not give it to the nanny either. Be sure to have PTO nailed down too, and I strongly recommend you have her accrue sick time and vacation time. I've seen nannies take all the PTO up front and leave a new employer high and dry. |
2 weeks paid vacation
federal holidays (and observed) paid off 5 sick days guaranteed hours |
What we did is all the federal holidays, minus Veteran's Day and Columbus Day, plus Christmas Eve and the day after Thanksgiving.
Plus 10 days vacation of her own choosing, 10 days guaranteed that we will choose with at least a month's notice, and 6 sick days, all paid. We also put in the contract that we would follow OPM for weather related closures - if it was a delayed start, we just asked her to get in as soon as possible. It's nice to figure that out ahead of time so you're not sitting there on the first day it snows trying to determine what to do. |
Good luck finding a nanny to agree to this. Anything can happen and we have bills too. |
All Federal holidays and you should get this straightened out prior to hiring as well as PTO or if there is separate sick leaves and vacation. |
I am a nanny and I first look at the rate since the rest is pretty standard: 2 week vacation time, 5 sick days, and all federal holidays. |
We don’t give any PTO for the first 90 days. After that she accrues one day a month of PTO. This is in our written agreement because some of them take advantage of it |
How many nannies have you had? |
We did the same thing. We've had the same nanny for over seven years so they accrue more vacation time, but it's sitll something that gets accrued rather than given all at the start of the year. |
I think this IS very reasonable + fair. Regarding giving the Nanny two weeks of paid vacation per year - I think it is only fair to give your Nanny her two weeks of HER own choosing, not only one. Especially for a very good, full-/long-term employee. |
My issue with this are the families who insist that the nanny accrues up to the last pay period of the year, then the total is reset in the first week of January. |
So they work three months and accrues no PTO? Seems to me that you are the one taking advantage. How do you feel about leaving your children with someone that you cheat from the get go? |
Smart nannies know how to negotiate. If the family wants to not have the nanny blow a year’s worth of sick and pto in the first few months then quit, I understand. I willingly agree to that, but i negotiate that accrual starts from day one, and if I choose to leave during that time, I forfeit the accrued time; if I am let go (no fault), they pay out; or if I stay, I can use it whenever I want after the three months (I set my pto dates with reasonable notice to the family so they can arrange coverage). |
Not everyone gets all federal holidays off. I’d give her the holidays that you have off plus two weeks. |
