Rate increase under these circumstances? RSS feed

We just hired a nanny. We have three kids (2, 4 and 8). Oldest is in school full time.but nanny does pick up some days. Middle is home all morning. She does PM preschool. Nanny does drop off sometimes and pick up sometimes (it is in the elementary building where oldest is, so one pick up). Youngest is home with nanny all day.

Next year, older two will be in school full time. Yes, nanny will have them during summer, teacher work days and after pick up, but the job becomes much easier (1 kid instead of 2 and no mid day drop off. One pick up at same location).

We like nanny and would like to keep her. Would you do an hourly rate increase? Seems strange because job is getting much easier. I do not want to do a "we pay x when you have one and y when you have 2/3" for easy of payment and record keeping.

Give a dollar an hour increase. Good faith.

If your Nanny is fantastic, I.e., punctual, reliable, responsible + your children love her then yes…..
I agree w/the above. ^^

To have someone trustworthy to care for your three children is priceless.

Is this a serious question?!

The job doesn’t get easier just because the toddler would be enrolled FT at school/pre-school. Inflation is high and every year employers do increase more than $1 FYI.

Exactly!! Especially if they want her available for sick days, summer etc

Honestly if the 2 and 4 year old play well together, the job may be HARDER with a single 3 year old bc the nanny will have to be the playmate all day. I'd give $1 increase for sure.

Agree with the PPs you should increase $1 an hour.

This. Not only do you think that it’s getting easier and so it doesn’t deserve a pay increase, you’re not looking at the long-term ramifications. If you do this now, I guarantee you will not have a nanny when the little one starts preschool part time. My nanny will already have another family lined up, because they will believe that they won’t have a full-time job when the child is in part-time preschool. if you want to keep the same nanny as her children go into full-time school, you will need to increase your hourly rate to keep up with a full-time rate. If you think that you can cobble together, college students or part-time nannies after school, talk to the parents of the kids in your oldest child’s class now. Consistent, reliable after school help is the single hardest thing for parents to find. All you have to do is keep your nanny. Good luck.

OP: you are getting way ahead of yourself since she is a new hire. If she's as good as you hope she will be, you will want to give her a raise. If she turns out to be a dud, she might not even be there in a year. Time will tell.

+1

Inflation also factors in. The year our nanny's job got easier was also a year of crazy inflation, so we went with a $1 raise.

Wait and see.

If you’re in the DC area, her rate should be between 25-30/hour, at least. Most nannies are getting that for just one child.

She must have fainted at your $1/hr for inflation. Even SS recipients got an 8% increase. I hope she finds a new job with people not as cheap as us you . What a. Insult!

OP how much are you paying for your nanny?

For three kids it should be $3/hr. increase.
