Which housekeeper to hire? RSS feed

We’re interviewing for a full time housekeeper, the role includes cleaning, Laundry and cooking and the schedule is M-F from 8-4pm

We phone interviewed about ten candidates and had two come for paid trials.
One is excellent but she has a morning job so she’s only available in the afternoons which isn’t great for us as the kids get home in the afternoon and it’s chaotic enough already. she speaks English and she has 20 years of experience.
The other is very sweet but has much less experience and less English. She’s been helping me this week and she’s really trying though if I wasn’t home I’m not sure how she’d be doing as she asks so many questions. I had written everything down for her but because it’s a new role she’s definitely having a hard time finding her stride. Although I know it’s more challenging this week as we’re all at home and coming and going so much.

WWYD? Hire the more experienced candidate with the less than ideal schedule or give the less experienced one more time?

The first one. With 20 years experience I'm sure she can work around children.

Yes I think you’re right. It’s more than the noise and smells bother the kids and we want their rooms to be ready so they can start homework and the kitchen to be finished so I can cook

So ask her to do the kitchen first, and open windows while she's cleaning. I mean, honestly your kids are lucky to have someone doing this so they don't have to clean their own home. They can deal with the smells.

Ok thanks. Yes we also have a small laundry room so I usually get a load going of the kids gear while I’m making dinner. It’s much easier to have someone come in when we’re not home but it’s also frustrating to be paying someone who doesn’t really understand the role.

Interview someone else.

You mean a third person? Of the ten people we interviewed there were only two that could work the number of hours we need, and speak enough English to communicate with

Keep interviewing potential candidates. It seems like none of them it would be a good fit and match all requirements that you really need.

It's better to keep looking; if not, you will be searching again for someone when you realized the person you hired didn't work out.

OP - ugh but yes I think you’re right. We might have more luck in January when people are looking for a new role.

Hey, I am also looking to hire one. Anyone know what the going rate is for a house manager?

It depends on experience and job description, what do you consider a house manager, vs a house keeper or a house cleaner?

When you say the first one can come in the afternoons do you mean like 1230 or 3pm? Very early afternoon I would do that, if it’s mid or late afternoon I wouldn’t. Do you really need 40 hours per week of this? Do you have separate childcare?

Do your kids really need their rooms cleaned every day?

She has another position in the mornings so she’d get to our home around noon most days.
