Pro tip: check care.com, urbansitters, sittercity, and FB DMV nanny groups. SOOOO many *current* au pairs are trying to get nanny jobs on the side which is in violation of their J1 visa.

Yes, they are there. Either make it your full time job to be the visa police or look the other way.

Not a pro tip. It’s old news.

HF here. I would be pissed off if someone is using MY CAR to take on a side job---especially if they claim they need to rest during off hours. F that sh.

Many former au pairs who overstay visa on there too

That's different. The HF shouldn't have to work their schedule around the AP who wants to make money on the side, nor should they have to have their vehicle and gas used for another family.

That would be an immediate rematch for me.

*Anything* that impacts their ability to do their job should be rematch.

They are present, yes. You can either commit to being the visa police full-time or choose to ignore it.

Wow. Turn them in and have the deported.

And if you know who the other family is make sure you make it WELL known to their neighbors, friends, and employers that they hired an illegal nanny.

Some of you are petty and ridiculous. My AP is off between 9:30-2:30 every day. If she wants to pick up a few extra dollars on the side I do not mind as long as it does not conflict with her duties. If we need to alter the schedule during the day for whatever reason, then our family takes priority re her schedule. She absolutely is not allowed to have other kids in my car (for liability reasons).

ALL of your AP’s are doing some kind of side hustle while they are here. $200+ (for the families like us who pay a bit more re: stipend) does not go “far enough” when you take in to account inflation, the increase in travel costs, etc.

As someone said above, let them be.

We looked the other way if our AP took a few Friday night babysitting gigs, or was a dog-walker a few times. I would not look the other way if they had a regular gig.

I give extra here and there and give travel bonus to help but I do not allow side jobs. I sacrifice my privacy living with someone for a reason. She needs to exclusively work for me for my convenience. Don't need potential dramas on the side.
