I Miss Being a Nanny! RSS feed

I was a nanny in Virginia back in the late 80s to early 90s and wow, do I miss it! First of all, I'm SHOCKED at how much money you're making now! Back then I got $350/wk as a live-in mother's helper as my first nanny job, and at my last job I made $450/wk as a live-out. That was all in my late teens through about 25 years old. I got married to a Marine at 21 years young and after moving around, being a SAHM with three kids (two have special needs but are 23 now) and currently working as a substitute teacher in special education at a school on a Marine Corps base, I want to use my years of experience to bless a family who has special needs children. I have such a heart for serving a family and their children, and making their lives easier by standing in and doing what they aren't able to do at home because they are at work. I miss the DC area and all the fun things to do there and would love to be a live-in up there during the week and come home on weekends ( I live in N. Carolina). That's all a dream for now though, as my special needs kids need me pretty much every day (they will always live with us) and I can't imagine my husband trying to care for them by himself. For now, I'm enjoying reading the Nanny boards and learning how things are nowadays. I'm actually trying to convince my daughter to be a nanny up there after she graduates from high school (she's in 8th grade), and have begun training her to be ready in case she is interested. Maybe I'll live vicariously through her.

Merry Christmas, nannies and families!

Once a nanny always a nanny! Merry Christmas to you too!

If you daughter wants to be a nanny make sure she at least gets an associates degree in Early Childhood Development and her preschool teaching credentials. Then she can make good money and have the option to teach.

I do love being a nanny. I came to it late in life as a second career and have never been happier. It’s an amazing privilege to be a part of a new human’s life!

Nanny here. I do love my job And would never change it.

BUT if I had had a daughter I would have encouraged her to pursue another career. Honestly, the money is not always great (it's good but you can make way more), some parents are disrespectful (most are good but the little part of those who aren't just spoil the whole experience) and let's be honest, I'm tired of the pity looks I get when I say the job I do. Like oh poor girl, she's only a nanny ...
