Should I lower my rate? RSS feed

Anonymous
I get paid $25/hr at my full time job. My boss is “sharing” me with another family who has an emergency and need sitting coverage from 6pm till 8am next morning. I do $125 from 9pm-8am but for the additional 3 hours (6pm~9pm) should I lower my rate to $20 given that it is babysitting and I will be doing very little? I honestly dont think they care either way and I am just overthinking it!!

Keep your regular rates. $25/hr is very modest.

Op here- I should add that this is for 4 days a week for the next 6 weeks...

Op here.. I’m not sure about VERY modest but my point is $25= a whole lot of responsibilities whereas I wont be doing much at the other house and so I feel kinda bad charging $25....

Talk to them about it. It sounds reasonable.

Charge $100 for 10pm-6am (8 hour overnight period), then $25 for the rest of the time.

Please do not undervalue yourself.

This. Presuming you're sleeping overnight, not caring for infants, have an overnight rate and then your regular hourly rate.

+1. Don’t lower your rate. When your regular employers find out you lowered your rate for their friends they will be pissed.

Op here. This is actually a great point I hadn’t considered. Thanks!

Stand strong, woman. Be paid what you are worth. What do you think your mother and grandmothers marched for?

Omg aren’t you being a bit dramatic? It is totally reasonable to adjust a rate according to the amount of work. $20 to do very little I think I’m still honoring what they marched for.

Hell no! You are doing them a huge service and your time is worth the same for them as it is for your employer. Did your employer ask you BEFORE she offered to ,"share" you with other family,? If not, I would be looking for a job with someone who doesn't treat you like a piece of furniture.

Never be taken advantage of. And if you offer, they will.

These are not "women for women."
