Nanny pay for 4 children? RSS feed

Anonymous
We have 4 children..our oldest being 9 and our youngest 1. We expected our older children would be in school and planned to just pay a nanny for our 2 youngest. Since that is no longer the case we are not sure what to pay...what would you say is a fair amount for 4 children? Our old nanny use to help keep the house tidy and with laundry. I would like the same but maybe that is a unrealistic expectation with 4?

Any extra chores beyond keeping your kids happy and alive is unrealistic. I would say $30 an hour.

If your Nanny will be responsible for the care of four children, w/the add’l duties of assisting w/school lessons, etc. then I don’t think you should ask her to be responsible for laundry.

Though she should have the house presentable when you come home.
But I wouldn’t require her any household chores aside from washing any dishes used & picking up whatever toys/books your kids take out.

Nannies getting $30 for one Child
Personally you and your potential Nanny should
Come up with a rate that will work for both
Less rate more benefits.....Four children don’t matter the age
It’s a lot of work

Nanny should be responsible for the kids laundry and rooms. $20-30 an hour.

Why don’t you take the job caring for four kids for $20 then
What you don’t like for yourself don’t do it to others

Nonsense

As much as you can afford. Cut back on any extras for your family. Don’t expect any housework unrelated to your children.

For actual rate advice your general location would be helpful, as well as whether both parents will be working or at home. Plus, do you want a very experienced nanny you won’t have to manage daily or are you willing to put in a lot of management work with a less experienced nanny?

In San Francisco you’d be looking at $40/hour minimum. In Oklahoma, you’d be looking at $20/hour minimum.

There are a variety of factors here.

Are there any special needs?
Will nanny need to cook lunch or just assemble/warm it?
How did dl go in the spring with your older two kids? Can they do the work with minimal help or will she need to teach? Are there executive function issues making it mandatory that she stay on top of focus during zoom, concentration during an offline assignment, due dates and zoom times?
Do both of the younger kids nap?
What are your expectations re: crafts and movement for all, education for younger two?
How many hours and cash/on-the-books?
Are you willing to have your older children so start helping the nanny with chores(if they’re old enough for dl, they’re old enough to help do chores)?
Are you looking more for a nanny who will middle through with dl or a former teacher/homeschooler who may charge more, but will be able to handle it better?
Are you open to a nanny bringing 1-2 elementary age kids with her, minimal needs, but not old enough to stay home and do by themselves? What about a nanny with a toddler/preschooler the age of your third child?

Answer those and I can give you a better ballpark.

$20 an hour for an unskilled job is reasonable. I have done the job several times when I was younger.

Good luck with that attitude, PP. The market sets the rate, not your opinion on nannies. Let us know who you get to care for four children at $20 an hour.

Not with 2 dl, and 4 total! Not when a nanny can get a $25/hour job with just one toddler.

I agree with this, except the bottom end should be 24/hour, not 20.

With that being said, if your nanny will be responsible for supervising the older kids' distance learning, you cannot expect any additional chores beyond the bare minimum of cleaning up from meals and toys... even then, you should be prepared to give a lot of leeway.

In regular time for those ages, I’d charge $25-30/hr. During a pandemic with possibly working parents and distance learning? $40/hr. If you want cleaning, that’s $50/hr.

The only nanny who will do this job for $20 including cleaning is undocumented and desperate. Hope you don’t need her to help with schoolwork! Otherwise, $40/hr and do your own cleaning.

If you're expecting laundry, support with distance learning, cooking, cleaning and leading activities with the younger ones I'd say $33+ per hour.

I agree $30-35
