Nanny is vacationing in Florida soon RSS feed

I'm not sure how to handle this, but our nanny is supposed to travel to Florida in a couple of weeks and the last time I asked, she was still planning to go. She is driving, not flying, and staying in a hotel. We feel pretty uneasy about this and may ask her to not come to work for 2 weeks afterward. WWYD?

I’d probably follow up and see if she’s still planning on going to Florida.

Two week quarantine when she gets back. Unpaid.

I would talk to her about it and say that if she intends to go, you’d need a two week quarantine when she returns. You can’t not pay her however or you’re risking losing her or her taking another job in that two weeks and not telling you.

Also, how careful are you about this social distancing? You don’t have a leg to stand on if you’re seeing friends and letting your kids play with other kids.

Nanny here, I love to travel but this is not a good decision on her part unless it’s for a funeral or to see a sick family member. I would definitely either require her to take two weeks off after returning or present a negative test to you all. If she has a guaranteed hours clause in her contract then you’re required to pay her for it, but if she does not then you could offer it unpaid. I’m usually a strong advocate for nannies being paid when families are the ones not offering work even though we’re guaranteeing our availability, but in this case I would not blame you for offering it unpaid as going to Florida now is poor decision making.

Nobody vacations in Florida in July or August.

+1. Another nanny here and I agree.

Just because she presents a negative test, doesn't mean she won't have it later— she should quarantine for 2 weeks after she travels which should be unpaid. Florida is a hot spot right now and I wouldn't trust it. I would be upfront so there isn't any confusion— her two week quarantine would start from the day she return home (in your state/city). Then, after the 14-day quarantine, she should take a test. But I agree, if this is just for leisure, I wouldn't be traveling— maybe if you can afford it, volunteer her to not travel and work (can you afford her to be gone for 3-4 weeks all at once?) or not work but to stay local.

Have her not come to work until 14 days after her return from Florida... that state is on fire especially in the Miami area.

This is exactly what we arranged with our nanny when she went to Florida for the month of July.

Agree. And I'd tell her this before she goes.

If someone told me to quarantine after my vacation, I’d just stay an extra two weeks on vacation. Unless it’s the law Jax you’re not paying me, I can do as I please. If you want me to stay home for two weeks, you can pay me. Thanks!

+1. I’m a nanny and I agree. I hope the above covidiot nanny gets fired. Stupid nannies like that give us all a bad name.

Hopefully you’re paying her if you want her to quarantine two weeks.
