education options for au pairs this summer? RSS feed

Our au pair, who heads back home this fall, is hoping to do a substantive course this summer for her final 3 credits. She'd been planning on taking a class at Montgomery College, as she did this spring (it started in person then moved to zoom), but she's finding that most of the classes don't include a live/synchronous aspect on Zoom and are instead recorded lectures. This doesn't seem so great to us. Any other ideas? She'd prefer something that's not totally pointless--that is, where she'd actually learn something and have some feeling of engagement with other people, even if over computer. Thanks in advance.

Have her email the college to set up a call about it. Request at minimum 30 minutes to discuss different options, and have her pay out precisely what she wants: nothing prerecorded, open to either in person or live online, etc.

Is she interested in English classes?

Not a substantive class. Our AP has fluent English and has taken a lot of online courses during the shutdown. Most colleges are not promising in-person classes in the Summer/Fall.

Op here. No - her English is good and she wants it learn something new. Could be anything from art to American culture to something social sciences-y (she wants to be a psychologist). The key thing is we are looking for classes that are not just recorded lectures but that have a class meeting via zoom. The idea is to have something to look forward to each week and to have some Interaction with instructor and fellow students. I will keep looking

Op here. Not looking for in person just looking for classes that meet digitally in real time rather than a recorded lecture and discussion board. Montgomery college seems to be mostly the latter this summer. Where has your ap done her classes and were they for credit? We are happy to pay up to $1000 for the class if it actually checks these boxes, seems only fair given how curtailed our app’s experience has been overall.

Have her email all the local colleges, if you’re willing to pay up to $1k. She needs to set up a time with a counselor at each one, and if she sends the email first with the list of what she wants, they should be able to go over a selection of classes with her.

Right, thanks, I know we could do this the question isn’t so much what class to take take but what institutions are offering most classes in live zoom format versus recorded. I have a few ideas already but was posting here in case others had other leads or tips.

We settled on art classes through Corcoran at GW, and Borough of Manhattan Community College au pair program with a DC-focused class, both have live online sessions

Most classes will be recorded, which is why I recommended she get a list (most likely short) from each as to what they will guarantee to be live zoom or in person. Community colleges are notorious for changing instructor and/or method at the last minute, which is why she needs to clarify with someone at the college. If she takes anyone else’s word, getting the money refunded to use in a live class at another institution won’t happen, but if she was guaranteed it was going to be live by someone (who has the authority to make that guarantee) at the college, then she has the ability to argue for a refund to go elsewhere.

Got it — thanks so much for explaining and very helpful and much appreciated!
