AP Extending - When to renew visa? RSS feed

Our AP has decided to extend (yay!). The original plan was for her to go home for two weeks in August/September and renew her visa (we need her to be able to travel internationally in 2020-2021, assuming we can can travel internationally). Now, with Trump's nonsense, we are worried that she won't be able to get back in the country. What to do?

Trump’s nonsense fortunately doesn’t extend to au pairs as they aren’t immigrants, but there is no way I’d risk it as early as August/September. I’d just have her stay and forget the international travel (for her at least, though the chances of it for anyone are thin).

She wants to go home and see her family for a vacation, so we need to figure out best time to do it, so either late August or late September is what we're thinking...

I definitely wouldn’t send her home in August or September, it’s been said that international travel likely won’t get fully reopened until after a vaccine comes out. By August/September there is no guarantee she’ll be able to come back or that her visa extension will be accepted. Her home country might also have rules about her needing to self-quarantine if coming from the US, EVEN in August or September.

Well, she wants to go home and see her family. The original plan was to go home in April for a visit (ticket credited as a voucher), and then go in August. So, we will need to make sure that she can go home for a visit. The vaccine is a good 18-24 months away, so it cannot be that there will be no international travel during the wait for a vaccine...

The problem isn’t that there won’t be any international travel. It’s that their might be restrictions regarding who can come into the US. As a US citizen you will always be allowed back, it’s not always the case of APs and might well not be the case if she comes from a country with high death toll.

Her country had about 15k infected, 200 deaths, so if anything, they would be worried about her coming from the US...

You obviously seem positive that sending your AP in at least two planes across the world is the perfect and most reasonable thing to do so not sure why posted when you so obviously want to follow through with your plan ? If you are willing to take the risk just book her. Just don’t come back on here complaining your AP is stuck or realized the US lockdown might still last a while and she might as well stay home with her friends and family.

1) I think you two need to talk and see if she and you will be happy/comfortable not going home, and without international travel following year

2) the embassy in her country likely is not having any appointments right now.

3) starting in July start checking on if the embassy giving appointments out and what availability is. Likely it will be a mayhem because there will many-many people who have been trying to get visas in the last few months... if she is from a country that requires tourist visa it will be even worse.

4) get appointment time. Check if US at that moment admits people from her country. Make sure that YOU are comfortable accepting back to the family an individual who just traveled many miles and interacted with many people. Make plans for 2-week quarantine if you like.

5) if #4 doesn’t pan out, go to step #1, and be happy that you all are healthy and count your blessings

If you really want to extend with this AP make sure she is ok with the chance she might not be able to go home anytime soon. Anything else is equal to both of you burying your head in the sand and hoping for the best.

She will always be able to go home. The return is question.

That is what I am saying, if there is a chance she wont be able to come back, would you want her to go? I guess you are the one who need to do some thinking...

Well, I don’t think of APs as indentured servants. I want her to be happy and emotionally supported - sustaining her family relationships is part of that. She also hasn’t taken any vacation and I cannot bar her from traveling.

Ok. So what is your question again?

August or September, her visa expires on August 19.
