Going from share to one family - pay decrease? RSS feed

I am a nanny with two charges. One family is moving away at the end of October and the other family wants me to stay on, but they can't pay me what I was making for two. How much of a pay cut would you take to stay on with an employer / charge you love?

Can another family be found so that it can continue to be a share situation?

How much of a pay cut can you afford to take? How much do you love your charge?
Do you love him enough to stop doing your hobbies that cost money? To eat beans and rice for dinner every night? To sell your car and bike/walk to work?
These are things only you can answer.

Depends on how much you’re currently making, and what the going rate for one child is in your area. I would think it would be about a $2-3 an hour pay cut. Can you afford to take that kind of pay cut?

They should either find another family or be willing to pay a singleton rate; not the single rate of a share. I would start looking for another job or assist them in finding a share family.

And to add, I couldn’t possibly go from $20 to $10 or $25 to $12.50 and hour. If you make $20, I wouldn’t go below $17/18 and $25, no lower than $20. At the end of the day, it’s about what you can afford. You have to do what’s best for you just like they will do what’s best for them.

To clarify, they would pay the rate for a singleton, not the single rate of a share. It will probably be three dollars an hour less. They hope to find another family, but it's hard to find the right age kid and I don't really want to do a toddler and an infant.

Well, we don't know your budget...It sounds like that would decrease your pay by around $120 or more per week, depending on how many hours you work.

What would you have to cut back on (or eliminate entirely) to accommodate that? Would you still be able to make rent and other essential bills? Have enough funds to go out and do things you enjoy (hobbies, nights out with friends, vacation, etc?) Would it jeopardize your ability to save for your own next egg/emergency fund?

What do they pay you now with 2 families?

None. Either they pay full or find a new family to share. Why are nannies so willing to be taken advantage of?

That's not how market rate works, but ok.

This depends on the contract. If it is a share contract and one family leaves the share, that nullifies the contract. So the remaining employer is not obligated to pay the nanny the same rate.

The family and the nanny should negotiate a new pay rate if the family can afford it. I wouldn't have been able to in that situation but it's worth trying.
