Would you give a nanny a glowing recommendation just to avoid unemployment claims? RSS feed

What if an unemployed claim could bring attention to a someone questionable employment (a nanny paid by a company - as if she were an employee of the company rather than the owner’s household?)
Anonymous
If she was let go she can still get unemployment with a glowing reference.

Nope. I pay unemployment taxes so my nanny could get unemployment. That's what it's for. I'll give a reference appropriate to the performance (my nanny was awesome) if asked.

Would I lie about a nanny’s performance in order to get her hired (and possibly fired) more quickly? All because I lied about her being a business employee vs a household employee? Am I reading this correctly?

Yes. You are reading it correctly.

Give her anything she wants, because you could be in trouble if she brings any kind of attention to you.

Unscrupulous, selfish people do unscrupulous, selfish things. However someone like that shouldn’t be believed regardless - a good or bad recommendation from a known liar means nothing.

Wow. OP, I hope you see that attempting to skirt the law to serve a few dollars has consequences that you didn’t foresee. Take some accountability for your actions. Why was she let go? Did you honestly not think about this? I hope that you are a troll.

OP here and I am the former nanny. I’m trying to understand why my former employer (who actually told me she hated me when she fired me) gave me a glowing recommendation to my new employers!

And for the record, I had no idea I was being paid by his company.

What!?! If you are being paid through a business, that would be clear on your paystubs. And you worked for a family that told you they “hated” you upon termination? This all sounds too bogus.

OP here. Not bogus. Automatic deposit and I actually never thought about it since the father owned the company. I gave my hours to the bookkeeper but thought the funds came from a household account.

And... whatever. My question is why the MB would give me a glowing recommendation when she hates me. Is it so that I would never file for unemployment? I got my new job in only four days from firing.

Yes, probably. If I were engaged in this kind of illegal activity, I probably would give a good recommendation just to keep the nanny off the radar.

But I hope you learned your lesson, OP. Pay attention and ask questions. That your employer cheated his company and then turned around and fired you is no coincidence.

They give a glowing recommendation to get rid of you and so you don't sue them for slander or termination.

Why would that be a benefit to pay you through the company?

+1. They want to be done with you.
