Nanny rate for 1 family with three kids (2 in school and 1 infant)? RSS feed

We have three kids, ages 5, 3, and 7 months and are considering hiring a nanny to watch the baby at home and help pick up the two older kids and watch them after school gets out around 3pm until 5:15. They are at two different schools for now but both pick ups are close by, possibly walking distance from house. Nanny would have the use of our car and we would add her to the insurance.

I’m interested in the range people pay nannies for a job like this. Are there other things the nanny helps with for the rate you pay? Do you also hire her to do extra hours during bad work weeks or when a parent is traveling? We have always used daycare but three drop offs and pick ups is just brutal.

I’m sure I’m not the only one in this situation but I can’t seem to find any recent posts on this (apologies if I just missed the thread, I’d love the link if it exists).

Between $20 and $30 per hour.

It’s a tough job with the pick-ups and juggling older kids after school and sick days/holidays. A good nanny could easily get a position with just one infant and earn $20 to $25 an hour.

Our nanny does everything for our child - her laundry, homemade baby food, cleaning and picking up toys, etc. Absolutely no Housekeeping.

What you outline sounds like a pretty standard nanny job. Our nanny helps with all errands/chores related to the children: taking them to enrichment classes/baby gym, laundry/making food for kids, cleaning bottles/baby gear, tidying the areas she and the kids use. She does a small grocery run during the week (mainly to top up kid food and get her own lunches) and occasionally other kid supplies if something's running low or needed urgently. Some people pay a bit more to have nanny do additional housekeeping duties, but I wouldn't recommend it for 3 kids including an infant full-time. Nanny won't have time to do all of it consistently, so you'd be better off getting a separate cleaning person a few hours a week if needed.
We guarantee hours for a "usual" workweek and pay extra for additional hours as needed for work, travel, date nights, etc.

For 3 kids and having to take baby along for pick up...I’d say at leas $23/h-$25/h. It’ll be tough for the nanny to do other housework even related to the kids. I’d say just require nanny to pick up after baby and kids. I would say no laundry. Also what time does baby nap and what time is pick up? Think of pick up would interfere would baby’s nap. Do you

And what do you mean “bad work week”?

Career nanny specializing in twins (including older sibling) and if I can manage all childcare related tasks, laundry, bedding, baby food, other food prep, etc., as well as providing an enriching environment, so can you!

OP, generally $20-30 but with your specific situation I would say around $25. Most nannies have a set rate that they will not go below based on your needs and household environment combined with their experience and education.

OP here, thanks for the feedback! So you think we could find someone for $25 who would be willing to do this type of job?

Bad work week equals one parent is away for a week so needing extra hours in the evening to help (would be negotiated in advance).

We have similar aged kids though I have one more a couple years older. We pay $23 right now in Nova. Our nanny doesn’t have a degree in child education but she is amazing and loving. She isn’t expected to do any housework except put away the kids laundry and pick up after them (well, have them pick up after themselves as best she can). She does put away the dishes too and take out full trash but we don’t ask her to do this. I think she’s slightly underpaid for the summer since we have the baby factor but going into the school year 2 of them will be in school until 3:30 every day so she will definitely make out then.

Poor helpless you who is incapable of taking care of her own three kids in the evening for a few hours? Why would a nanny want to spend her evenings taking care of your kids while you do nothing and she has already spent her day with them.

For what she does, she is grossly underpaid and you are just using her and taking advantage of her good nature. You do not need a college degree to take good care of children.

Nice try. She's happy, move on.
