Always Sick! :( RSS feed

I currently am a Nanny to a 2.5 yr. old little girl.
Have been w/her for the past eighteen months.

She started attending preschool in February & attends 3 days/wk.
I have her Tue/Thu.

Well she came down w/conjunctivitis two weeks ago.
Then shortly after so did I.
Hers seems to have cleared up on its own.
Mine?
Not so.
I wake up w/guck in my eyes, sometimes my eyes are “glued” shut.
My eyes itch all the time + I actually have a minor dry cough/congested nose as well.
Not to mention my face always looks red and swollen.

Yesterday I felt actually “sick,” and told them I was going to see a M.D. this week and get some rest.
(They had originally told me the pink eye would likely go away on its own after it ran its course like it did w/my charge.)
But I am starting to feel legitimately ill.

I told them last night that I would be taking Thu. off and they were not understanding about it.
They told me that it left no notice to get back-up childcare and that is why they hired a Nanny in the first place.
That no one who has conjunctivitis is actually “ill” and that I need to give it more time to run its course since I am older.

But I do feel ill and my Dr. is unable to see me until Thu. afternoon.
Am I in the wrong here?
Should I just go to work and give it more time??

Did you get the eye drops for conjunctivitis? Your employers are correct - you shouldn’t feel sick from pink-eye. Sounds like you have something else.

I’m taking a half/full day Thursday, to go to my doctor. I will see you Tuesday.

It is common for an individual to have cold-like symptoms when infected with pink eye.
Coughing, runny nose and frequent congestion are the most common.

Are you taking the whole day off? What time is your appointment? I know sometimes you can’t choose your appointment time and it’s in the middle of the day but even then if it’s at 2 pm couldn’t you work until 1 and have the back up sitter come in or mom and dad?

DS is just getting over pink eye. His pediatrician said there are no other symptoms to pink eye beyond goopy, itchy, red eyes. He said this just two days ago.

Why can’t you go to urgent care? You are being dramatic

You only work for them two days a week. They are right to be annoyed that you are calling off with little notice for essentially 1/2 of the week.

And you are wrong about the "pink eye". True bacterial conjunctivitis will not clear on it's own and can have serious complications. Viral conjunctivitis will and there is nothing to be done about it. Yours sounds viral...take some Claritin and do your job. A Dr isn't going to tell you any differently.

Pink eye can also be caused by something getting into the eye, just fyi. It’s possible that OP has viral, probable even. But if I’m miserable for several days, I’m also going to my doctor to rule out anything else.

I Googled “Conjunctivitis” and a link from the Mayo Clinic does state that other symptoms are common with pink eye.

Frequent nose congestion, runny nose and a dry cough are the most common side effects.

Any family that exposes their nanny to any eye infection should be prepared for any future time off.

Pink eye is just a pain!

If your kid has pink eye then you should either tell nanny to stay home WITH PAY or, if you have her come in, and she gets pink eye that she gets sick leave off WITH PAY!

.

Yes, redness to the sclera (no conjunctiva) can be caused by a foreign body or laceration, unlikely in OPs case as she has systemic involvement and its bilateral (just FYI!).
No one is saying don't go get it checked, just perhaps don't go at the last minute on one of the only TWO days you work for someone and then be shocked that your employer is a bit upset.

^^^^ I disagree with the above.
If your nanny comes down with pink eye, then why the heck would you want them in your home.....??!
Much less around your child????

Conjunctivitis is HIGHLY contagious.
Only a selfish and cheap parent would want a nanny with a contagious eye infection to care for their kid.

It is always the parent’s responsibility to have a back-up childcare plan in place.
Especially if you have a child who attends daycare or preschool where germs run rampant amongst the little ones.

It doesn’t matter if nanny works one day or six days a week.
Exposing your child to an eye infectious disease is the mark of a negligent parent.
Isn’t this one obvious?
