Hi,
We live in the Bethesda/Chevy Chase area and have a 17 month old who will be in nursery school two mornings a week and will have a newborn at home in October. I will be on maternity leave until baby is 3.5 months and then I return to work. I work from home, so start and end times are set. No working late. We will work with a payroll company and pay taxes. What is a typical hourly rate for 40 hours a week? |
$20 minimum |
Oh really $24-$30 per hour |
This. Although you have to remember that being home is no bonus to the nanny and may work against you. |
I mention that I work from home only to indicate that start and end times are firm/may even end early depending on the day. There is no risk to the nanny of a parent showing up late or having to go into the office early. I would see that as a definite perk/benefit to a nanny. |
It’snot, OP. Not unless you are in a locked guest house or floor of the house and never drop in. It is a complication for your older child as he/she will always prefer to be with you. Working from home is an added pressure for a nanny. |
Yes, it’s usually a ton of stress, unless you have a huge house with a good design. And, you are extremely self-disciplined. |
For 2 kids that age I would pay $20-$24 an hour.
Other things to consider are: will you contribute to health insurance as well and do you have a 3rd car for Nanny to use, if not you will need to contribute to the wear and tear on Nannys car too. |
This is the WORST place to ask. Just put out an ad for what you can afford comfortably. For 2 younger kids I would start at $20/hr. Good luck! |
Most of us know: You get what you pay for. Nothing good comes cheap. You aren’t entitled to quality childcare just because you “comfortably afford” whatever that number is for you. Please stop trying to mislead parents here. If, however, you know of a decent sitter who will take this job for $20., please post her contact here. Thanks! |
I would say $25-$30, but keep in mind that many nannies can get $25 for one child. Ultimately, you may need to post a range, interview, and see who you like. |
Start looking at $20/hour. I would expect to go up to $27 as it's only 40 hours (I.e. no overtime) and you work from home. So basically the nanny's boss will be watching (or within earshot) all day long. What if nanny wants to just sit on the couch and look at her phone while the kids are napping? What if she has to poop? It's going to cost you more because you are always there. |
This fight never ends and is ridiculous. I have found plenty of qualified nannies for $20/ hour. You can always start there and then adjust up if you aren't happy with the candidates. The nanny has a choice to accept your position or not. No one is forcing them to take a job at that price. |
If the kids know you are home they will always scream for you then it will the nanny's job to constantly deal with that. It's tough on the nanny. She may spend most of her time calming the children down. Forget any housekeeping. |
MB - NP. A reasonable boss would be fine with this unless something needed to be done urgently. I know I would be. We pay $19 but we do guarantee overtime each week, pay for health and dental insurance and have very generous leave (5 weeks). |
