I have been hosting for 8 years and only hire Europeans.

But the multiple posts on here and other places looking for and sad about Thai au pairs, makes me wonder why makes them sooooo great? Is it for infants?

I had one and it was not a good experience for me. She eloped after three months here, first telling the agency she wants to rematch, leaving me without childcare 10 days before my due date, even though begged her to delay until the day the baby is born and I am on leave. Overly focused on her appearance, lying, didn't drive well enough to drive, meek with kids and not following my directions of how to respond to them, then complaining about their behavior. People say theycook- she cooked nothing while in my home.
I don't hire Asian au pairs because the whole conflict avoidance method of communication looks more like lying to me and doesn't work for me.

We have hosted 3 Thai Au Pairs. Two were absolute unicorns.... loving, sweet, tidy, responsible...simple amazing. The other one was a GREAT au pair but was a bit more shy and hated Western food so it was a bit more challenging (although she was also sweet, tidy, responsible, etc.) The Thai au pairs we had left our house cleaner than when we left the house in the morning and were the kids' favorites. We also hosted 2 French Au Pairs who were good (not great) and a disaster Swedish AP who we rematched to a Mexican au pair who was great. Bottom line for us is we have had a FABULOUS experience with Thai Au Pairs. My best friend hosts exclusively Thai au pairs and the only issue she has ever had was driving....

Americans love submissive obedient Asian women.

Ours has been lovely. She is always on time, always pleasant, a safe driver. Would have gotten another thai au pair but concerned w/the visa situation.

I've hosted 2 and they have been fantastic with my baby and toddler (so sweet, gentle, and playful) and have been good cooks (I specifically screen for this).

Me too! I had one amazing Thai au pair - she cooked awesome thai food, was organized, took initiative, and she's still a good family friend. She worked as a nanny after she aged out of the au pair program, and just got her US citizenship.
Our 2nd Thai au pair was on the dating scene as soon as she set food on US ground. she asked for the day off to get her marriage license. it was a year of hell with her. one major example of her antics her bf met her at the playground while she was in charge of my kids. she's now married and has a kid and lives in a different state.

I think this is actually an example of the au pair process in general - you never know who will eventually walk through your door - and this is true for all nationalities.

ALWAYS, it's about the person, not the nationality. However, there may be cultural inclinations. Ask your placement coordinator if she can describe any distinctions.
