Most nanny employers inform nannies that they have cameras throughout the home. It is legal ONLY in public areas in your home (no bathrooms or if she’s a live-in you can’t have a camera in her room without consent). However, not informing candidates says a lot about you and if nanny finds out, she will 100% leave!! Because their is no trust: not because you don’t trust her but the fact you didn’t share this information and it’s sneaky.

Why wouldn’t you inform the nanny about the cameras? It’s very common even in daycares to have cameras and have all parties aware of it.

No, it is not legal in my state - you would need to check Virginia law on sound and image. But why would you want to not inform an employee that he/she is being recorded?

I think my advice applies to any + every situation.

Starting off any relationship based on deception is just a recipe for future disaster.

Be honest upfront - offer full disclosure.
Otherwise deceiving another person behind his/her back is considered a huge violation of trust and that is not how you want to treat someone that spends so much time w/your precious child.

Stores in California don’t have cameras with sound unless they have a sign saying they are monitored. I am not a nanny, so your bad name is all your own.

Our nanny, who is amazing, requested cameras in our home.

The majority of workplaces and homes now have cameras. I cannot think of one place in the past 20+ years I've worked where we don't have camera's. We have them in our home. Its nice to make sure things are ok, especially when I'm home alone and hear a bump in another part of the house or to monitor the kids.

A lot of people have cameras in the house for safety regardless of a nanny.

Yes. We don't record sound and there are no cameras in the bathrooms.

One in the kids bedroom and one that covers the whole common area.

Is it legal to film your nanny without her knowledge? I believe that was the question being asked.

Ummm I don’t think I said you shouldn’t have cameras. So what are you getting at?

I think OP is a nanny.

people focus on the question... OP is asking if it’s legal to have cameras and not inform a nanny about them...
