How long to wait for contract? RSS feed

Met with family (mom & kids) Saturday 8/4. Offered me the job Monday 8/6. Mom said she would write up the contract and arrange a time for me to come back to meet the dad and their other nanny. It is now over a week later Tuesday 8/14 and I am still waiting and getting frustrated. I have been trying to be patient but I need to know what's going on. I have decided to keep interviewing until we actually sign a contract as I don't want to miss out on another opportunity in case this job falls through. I have emailed her a couple of times but she always takes days to reply and apologizes but still no contract/meeting. What do you think?

Move on. Tell her you’re no longer interested in the position. If you’re saying you have more interviews I’m sure you’ll find another family who will be faster and quicker.
Anonymous
Don’t tell her you’re not interested. Although you’re interviewing doesn’t mean you’ll find another job right away so sit back, continue filling out applications (and interviewing) and wait to see what happens. When you find another job, then, you tell her you’ve moved on.

She doesn’t seem too serious about this job.
If she was, then she would do what she said she would in a timely manner.

But she seems to have higher priorities at the moment.

Unless you really need to secure a job ASAP for financial reasons, let her know that communication-wise you feel as if you are not on the same page & that you have decided to move on.

MB here.

I would take this non-responsiveness as a HUGE indicator of trouble. Good for you for continuing to interview OP. If you can feel comfortable doing so I would tell this woman that you're no longer interested.

OP here. Thanks all. She had promised me the contract by Tuesday 8/14, and now it is Wednesday 8/15 and I still have not had any contact from her.

In her defense, the job does not start until after Labor Day so maybe she is thinking she has plenty of time. But I just want to know I have a job secured for the new school year, before all the decent positions are taken!

I am kind of wanting her to take longer now, as it is giving me more time to interview and meet other families, and maybe I will get another offer during this time, who knows.

I don't want to tell her I'm not interested as I think it would be a good job if it all ends up working out. I do have some hesitations about it though, as the family already has 2 other nannies (1 full time and 1 part time) and they are hiring me as part time as well. I think I'd rather be the only nanny in the house...

OP here. I just went through something very similar, which I posted about on here. I got the job on the spot, answered to their deadline, but it took over a week to get a solid contract offer. During that time they missed their own set deadlines, didn’t call references at planned, and took hours/days to respond. I decided to keep interviewing, and got an offer from someone else. I accepted it, and then rescinded my acceptance. I wasn’t confident in the offer anymore, and felt the lack of communication early on was a bad sign. I would encourage you to try to nail something else down, or if you want this job, be candid and tell me that you’re losing faith in the offer given the lapse in time and response. See what they say as an indication of whether you need to rescind your acceptance or wait it out.

Thanks for this PP, I think I read your post about this. Had to followup with the mom again, she apologized said they have both been working crazy hours and haven't had time to work on the contract, but will try to send it today. I am just not feeling confident in this job, and honestly it is not my first choice, but was the only offer I had so far. This week I have a total of 3 interviews, so might have another offer. If that happens, how do I gracefully rescind my acceptance? I would feel really terrible doing that, as I did accept their offer, but of course have not signed the contract yet. I don't think I've ever had to rescind an acceptance before, what did you tell the family in your situation?

PP here. After finalizing the second offer, I emailed the mom this

“ I regret to inform that I have decided to rescind my acceptance. Due to the lack of communication, I have lost faith in the offer, and I no longer think this is a good fit. I’m sure you will find a great annny. I wish your family the best”.

I also put more specific detail to why I decided to rescind like their lack of response to me and my references.

Thanks for this, super helpful. I just had another interview this evening and they basically offered me the job on the spot. I asked that I have some time to think about it while they contact my references, and that I am still waiting to hear back from other families. I’m supposed to have another interview tomorrow but thinking I need to cancel it now. I am waiting to hear from another family I really liked that I met with on Tuesday. Ugh this is so hard and confusing. I want to make the right choice for me and not upset anyone. I think the first mom will be really mad if I rescind my acceptance and I’m afraid she will leave a bad review on care.com

PP here. I was concerned and worried she would be upset, but then realized I had to do what was best for me. Waiting wasn’t working. Do what is best for you and don’t feel bad about it. They should have secured you sooner.

Thanks, you are right. I am going to email her tonight or tomorrow morning. I am getting an offer from the family I met with on Tuesday tomorrow, so now will have to 2 to choose from.

Wait till you have a signed offer in hand then email the Mom that you would have loved to work with her, but weren't sure if she was committing without a contract so you had to go with another family who offered you a contract/start date.

Thanks. Should I tell her that I have received/accepted other offers or just keep that to myself?

I would tell her you accepted another offer. She may be interviewing other candidates or still looking. If she asks why, tell her you need the income to pay your expenses and need to have a job lined up. Keep it simple. Just make sure you have a job with a start date before you tell her anything.
