How common is it to take things from employers? RSS feed

I have a nanny that is phenomenal and my Toddler loves her. I suspect that she is taking small items from my home on occasion (a necklace from my jewelry box, similar items). Here on this anonymous forum, nannies, can you tell me if it is common to take things from your employers home - small things, that probably won’t be noticed? Or is this a sign that someone is morally corrupt and shouldn’t be working with kids? We pay her far above market rate and she has an easy job that I doubt she wants to lose over a $20 necklace, so I am mystified by this behavior.

MBs, would this be a dealbreaker for you, or are good nannies hard to find so you would live with it?

For the sake of argument, please assume that I am 90% sure that the nanny is taking the items, and the other 10% is the possibility that they were mysteriously lost. But I am someone who is very careful with personal possessions and never lost things like jewelry before this nanny started.

Thanks.

Is this post for real? She is stealing from you and you’re asking if it’s okay.

Move your nanny cam to your bedroom, leave out some cheap necklaces, tell nanny and child "no going in master bedroom for any reason" and then watch the camera.

I would fire someone who was stealing.

We've had the same nanny over six years and never found anything missing.

It’s not common at all, or nobody would have nannies.

Good lord, no. My nanny tells us if she takes so much as a band aid for herself! Either move the camera to a location where things have disappeared as a PP suggests, or mention casually that XYZ is missing and ask the nanny if she has seen them. Watch her reaction closely and see if she is nervous.

If your toddler is mobile there is a very small chance he/she could have taken those as playthings. I know my toddler enjoys putting shoes in random cupboards and closets as a way of “cleaning up”. but if your nanny is good she should have seen your toddler with some of the items.

Dealbreaker. You need to confirm this is happening before firing her.

No, no NO!! this is not the norm OP!!!!

If you strongly suggest your Nanny is stealing ANYthing from your home, then common sense & logic dictate you issue her walking papers stat!!

Your Nanny does not sound phenomenal at all to me -
She sounds like a common thief to me.

At my first nannying position the babies blowout got into my shirt! I tried to wash it off but I made it worse. I ended up texting MB if I could borrow a shirt. That’s as far as I’ve gone as “taking things,” but I let MB know. This is definitely not common at all. I suggest leaving a camera in your room to see what’s happening. I really hope this is a troll post.

Maybe it's the cleaning lady ? Some relatives you had over ?
Or you misplaced it ...

If you really have doubts, just put a camera and you'll see for yourself.

My nanny once called to apologize for forgetting to leave the $1.37 change and receipt in her pocket from the cash I left for her that day, which I hadn't even noticed until she mentioned it.

It's not about the dollar value - you can't trust someone who is dishonest and disrespectful with your home and its possessions.

Right!?! I don’t care if you’re my own mother, if you steal from me you are not welcome in my home. This is crazy.

Not common and not acceptable. Grounds (if you are sure) for immediate dismissal.

If she’s stealing you must fire her
