Hiring male nanny RSS feed

DW and I want to hire a male nanny for our 3-year-old twin boys. We are a two mom household and we like the idea the idea of our boys having a positive male role model in their daily life. We also want or sons to see men in traditionally female roles, like caregiving. We have friends with a male nanny who is amazing!

Unfortunately, a local male nanny was recently arrested and charged with indency with a minor. My wife is now concerned, she’s generally a very anxious person. I really don’t buy into the mindset that male caregivers are “riskier” than female caregivers. Also we will be vigilant about background checks and have cameras in our home. I’m not too worried, but would love feedback from parents and nannies alike.

Thank you!

Go for it. It seems like you are taking the necessary precautions. Just because someone hasn’t been arrested or charged doesn’t mean they’re pedophiles. However, you have cameras so as long as you’re honest with the nanny about that your children should be safe.

We have a male nanny for ... six years now. Two daughters. He's been with us since oldest DD was four months old. We have two nanny cams - one in the girls bedroom and another in the common area that can show living room, dining room, and kitchen. When DD1 was little we would watch the nanny cam almost daily. Now, it's really only if one of the kids is going through a hard time. Like when one went through a hitting phase - we paid more attention to make sure he wasn't losing his cool.

We checked references. When people said "Oh, he's great!" we asked "Why? What makes him great? Did your CHILD think he was great too? Did your pet think he was great?"

When was the last time you heard of a women molesting a boy or girl? Yes, by the numbers, males are clearly riskier!!

That said, there are great male nannies and male Early Education teachers so just hire with due diligence.

Tuesday. Two college nannies were arrested and charged for molesting their 4ayear-old charge. These girls were hired through an agency that prides itself on having affordable college aged nannies.

OK, now provide the stats on the percentage of men who are pedophiles compared with the percentage of women. A one off does not a pattern make. Men are and will always be riskier around kids. That's how they're wired. Does that mean no women are ever pedophiles or child abusers? No, of course not. It just means men are statistically more likely to be abusers than women. Personally, I'd be leery of any man who wants to be alone with a child; but that's just me.

I say go for it. Too be honest, you have some nasty ppl in the childcare field, both men and women. That’s just like when ppl say they go w/ daycare over a nanny because for some reason “daycare is safer.” Not true and I’ve left centers because of ppl neglecting kids and the supervisors turned a cheek.

Your boys are 3, so they should be able to talk. I would have a conversation w/ the boys (even if you hire a female nanny) and let them know that they can talk to you and let you know if someone is doing something they don’t like (or wrong)- kids are smart. I would definitely do a paid trail maybe 1-2 days and see how the boys interact with him and vice versa. And at the end of the day, go with your gut!

Of COuse there are scads more male pedophiles then female pedophiles. Stop being purposely obtuse.

Yes, there are millions more male pedophiles than female pedophiles. That doesn't mean you cannot find a great male nanny. I would just screen VERY carefully, fingerprint background check and ask for more than the usual amount of references.

Good or bad, male nannies seem rather rare. I've met a few male APs, maybe try that?

I know two. Both work several part-time gigs, because all it takes is a child saying the wrong thing for them to be in hot water. If they have 4 families of happy kids and parents, an investigation into a 5th unhappy family is much less likely to cause a huge problem.

We have a male Au Pair and just extended for another year. I can tell you: I was scared choosing him. My husband insisted, because besides “he is male and male caregivers might molest my children”, I did not have any arguments against. Could not have made better choice. We love him, children love him, he has more energy than any female person we could hire (and one of our previous nannies ran a marathon). He just connected with my sporty kids better.

I say go for it!

Men don't inherently have more energy than women, PP. That was truly a stupid comment.

I am glad it worked out for you however.
