| We would need care for 8 hours a day/5 days a week. 4 YO is special needs and goes to PEP for half the day. What is the going rate for taking care of 1.5 kids? Thanks. |
| Impossible to answer without details about how much experience you want, education, legal status, where you are located and what kind of special training the nanny would need to care for your SN child. |
We would prefer legal employment We are located in Rockville Maryland Education is not so much important to me as their ability to connect with my child and support his language development. DS is suspected of being high functioning autistic/ADHD and is minimally verbal. We are getting a full evaluation done in a month but his current daycare is setting him off. He has become a bitter the daycare does not know how to deal with it. DS has high anxiety towards new people and situations so transitions are difficult. The nanny would need to help provide a structured environment that allows DS to learn communication and adjust to transitions. The nanny will be taking care of DS1 for half the day and DS2 for the whole day. |
You will not find anyone for less than $30 an hour. The half-day thing is minimal and really not to be considered since the nanny will cover his sick days and school holidays as well as do his laundry, make his meals and straighten up his room whether he is in school or not. And with his behavioral issues, it could easily be more than $30. A biter at four is a big deal, OP, for any nanny or teacher. |

The $30/hr minimum is correct. You require a professional with solid experience with challenging children, not your average sitter. Can you afford this?
The biting is a symptom of something serious. |
|
OP $30 an hour is craziness.
You could find someone in the $15-$20 range easily for a 40 hour work week. Most nannies provide structure throughout the day and know some kids have a hard time with transitions. Just be honest when you place your ad. |
You should recommend some qualified possibilities. |
Like I said, he doesn’t bite at home or PEP., just at this daycare. When he is home with his younger brother, he actually go out of his way to make sure he doesn’t hurt his brother even if his brother hits him. 30 is too much. At most we can pay is 22. |
Please let us know what kind of person you're able to find at that rate. And if she stays past 10 weeks. You seem to be insinuating the problem is with the daycare, not your child. Is this right? Do you know the other families there? |
Yes. That is what I am saying because we are not seeing this behavior elsewhere. When we ask the teachers what happened, the answer is always we didn’t see. He is speech delayed so he can’t tell us. He is also getting a formal diagnosis soon so we may be able to start medication which could help. |
| OP here. I don’t think a nanny is the right path for us. He actually likes daycare just not his current class. I think we need to find a smaller sized class for him. He didn’t have these problems in his twos class with better teacher to student ratios. |
I would resort to the meds only as a last resort. First change his quality of care. That can make a huge difference. |
We are considering meds because of his attention issues and speech delay. It is significantly afftecting his development. |

OP, for a discussion of special needs related issues go to the Kids with Special Needs thread on the Parenting Forum - great and experienced people there.
For a nanny, if you advertise a position in Rockville at $20-22/hr you will be FLOODED with applicants. You would really be able to pick the best fit for your family's needs. - Kensington mom of one borderline special needs kid, and who's hired a handful of nannies over the years |
