Parents who low ball you because the infant sleeps half the day RSS feed

Just had a family tell me they will pay $150-1$75 per week because " well the baby sleeps most of the day". The baby is 2 months old.

I pay more than that for my dog. That is seriously horrible. I guess I can't understand from what point of reference she thinks that would be an acceptable rate? I haven't babysat in about 15 years, but even back then I was making $6/hour for one kid.

No shortage here of ignorant parents. This is just another reason why parents are expected to share their price range BEFORE wasting time for a meeting. If they don't, they have somethinng to hide.

Many parents still don't understand the importance of engaging a newborn when awake. Babies don't sleep as much during the day as most parents believe unless the poor baby is bored.

Op here. They did share because I asked!

I always say my rate is my rate because you are paying for my skill set, experience and time.

I’ve had parents tell me they don’t pay once the kids are asleep because I’m not “doing anything.” Ok, well then I guess I can go? Do you think I’d choose to stay at your house in my free time?

+2... I see these lowball offers all the time on care.com. And to add insult these families really think they are offering something amazing. Not everyone can afford a nanny and that’s ok. Just look for a daycare or in home daycare. I swear it seems like people just want the luxury of saying “I have a nanny”

+3! I love the bolded comment so much! If someone is watching your child, then you’re paying them not only for the obvious reasons (caring for your baby), but also for the time they’re spending at YOUR house on the clock rather than being able to go home or run errands. I’m so glad that the parents at my current job aren’t like this.

Yes thank goodness. I asked before meeting them.

$150-175? So they just want you to feed, change and put him or her to sleep, right? They don’t need no stimulating activities, no fresh air, no laundry, no dishes? Because that’s what you get for $150-175 a week.

Put your child in daycare. You can find a family home for maybe $275 for an infant.

What? My daycare charges $325/wk, and that's considered an excellent rate. This family is crazy. Move on.

Babies don't sleep because they are bored. Newborns sleep a lot, but then they grow and stay awake more. And i doubt that parents like this will raise the rate when the baby is more alert--they're just cheap. WHich is why they are trying to pay $3-5/hour for child care.

You are doing something. Being available for whenever the child needs you. If you can't leave the house you need to be paid.
