Overnight Pricing RSS feed

Hello all,

I have set an overnight price and my employers have agreed. I have my fourth overnight scheduled and my fifth being discussed. Currently, I am paid for all waking hours with the children plus my overnight fee. My question is... Are you paid during the children’s waking hours or your typical waking hours? Currently I am paid until @ 7pm, but it seems more logical to be paid until 10pm. I would certainly be paid that if babysitting. At the same time, I am paid well and very much like this family and don’t want to push anything. I would not bring this up until contract renewal. What is your experience?

Its usually kids waking hours. So if the kids are in bed by 7pm then that's considered overnight.

I charge up until 10:00, then a flat overnight rate.

I’m also in the middle of a long stretch of overnights. My hourly rate stops when the girls (8mo twins) are put down to bed. Then I have my overnight rate of x. I don’t stop working just because they’ve gone to bed. It’s almost 10now and I’m just as busy with kid related stuff as I am when they are awake. Same as you, I’m paid well and like my NF. I’m here anyway, might as well stay busy.

I charge a flat rate for the entire day.

Live-in nanny here. This is one of the things that I make sure goes the way I need it to during negotiations. I am paid for every working hour, regardless of when kids are awake, with the supposition that I will have 8 hours to sleep (10 pm to 6 am), which is paid if it’s only one day, unpaid for 2+ days. If kids wake with nightmares or are sick during the night, but I am able to get at least 5 hours of sleep uninterrupted, I let the parents know, but pay doesn’t change. If I can’t get at least 5 hours of sleep consecutively, the parents pay for every hour that night. It doesn’t happen often, but I need to know I am compensated when it does occur.

If you advocate for yourself to get this and you get it then good for you. It’s not a common expectation to be paid while you sleep, however.

There are specific legal protections for nannies to get overtime pay. There are specific protections for overnight pay for employERS in that the family does not pay you for all the hours that you sleep when you provide overnight care.
